?How To Keep The Claws Off The Couch?

.....and the leather recliner and the bedspread.....

It's too late for preventive maintenance; I have the claw marks in my chair [and] my couch to prove it; but is there a way; short of having my cat de-clawed; to prevent further "sharpenings"?

When I catch Kiki doing it, I just tell her "paws, no claws :nono:" and redirect her to the carpeted stairs, which is her designated scratching post until I can get her a real one.

So far she's doing very well. :yay:

Introduce them to a scratching pole. It may slow it down some.

I put masking tape on the corners of my couch and it actually seemed to help alot.
Never stopped it entirely :ohwell:

I hope you get her a scratch post soon vrai or your going to be replacing the carpet on the stairs because they can do a real job to it in no time if you aren't careful. My brothers cat did that at the top of the stairs and the carpet had to be replaced it was a big mess. They have these scratch posts that come in a like a cardboard box type thing that has scatch post type material on top of it and it just laid flat on the floor my brothers cat loved it and still uses it to this day but when he gets bored and nobody is home the carpet is his best friend not the furniture as he learned at a young age like kiki is learning that the carpet is the best place to scratch.

Thank you vrai. I [have] to ask, how did you get verbal discipline to work? Most cats; mine included; tend to look at you/me with what I call an "I don't [think] so dude," look. I also have a scratching post that I spread cat nip on. However, when the catnip's gone from the post, it's back to the leather chair. :-\

It's like with little kids - you just keep on them and eventually they get it. I doubt it's the verbal part; probably more the chastising tone and then the redirect.

If worse comes to worse, get a squirtgun and nail her with it when she goes for the chair. She'll get the message.

:yeahthat: That's what we do. Our cat is deaf, so verbal commands obviously don't work. Now when he starts doing something he's not supposed to do, he keeps an eye on us. When he sees us glance at the squirt bottle he takes off running. :lmao:

Let the Games Begin!

Squirt bottle works but... you must keep it on you at all times.

I battle with CRS and sometimes can't even remember that there IS a squirt gun.

Also you can add a little listerine to put an icky taste in the water so not only do they get annoyed by the nailing they have to clean that nasty sh!t off! :lmao:

It won't hurt them, and it's funny to watch their faces the first time they lick it off! :killingme

Now all I have to do is pick up the bottle and cats go every direction! :yay:

I give my cat a scratching post as well. And I sprinkle cat nip on it to attract him. Also, remember to clip the nails.
