How to stop a dog from digging.

Okay, my dog likes to dig. He loves that the ground here is nothing but sand and has dug some really deep holes that I just continue to go out and cover back up after I show him the hole and tell him "no". This is getting old, so I went online to see what I could do to make him stop digging. Seems everywhere I looked they suggest to put some of his own poo in the hole because dogs can't stand the smell of their own poo. Has anyone tried this? I just want to know if this will work before I go out and do this. Someone suggested to me moth balls, that just doesn't sound right and I'd be afraid the smell of those wouldn't deter him and he'd eat them. Any other suggestions would be great. He rarely stays out long but apparently he's out long enough to dig a good size hole. It's always in the same spot.

My dog used to dig in the flower bed. I cut a piece of wire chicken fence and filled the hole most of the way. I put the chicken wire down and then covered it with dirt and mulch. I watched him dig and hit the fence and quit. It worked. He didn't seem to like the feeling of the fence on his nails.

The poop stops them from digging in that spot (and maybe around that area), but if he really loves to dig he'll just find a different spot. Usually they dig out of boredom. Our dog and our neighbors' dogs used to love to try to dig under a certain spot in our fence. We filled the hole with dog poop, covered it up with dirt, and they stopped.

The poop suggestion works---it will also keep a 125 pound Great Pyrenees from crushing everything in newly planted flowerbeds as he searches for a cooler spot in which to rest...

If you figure it out let me know. My dog has 5 fenced acres to roam, kids, cats, ponies, and horses to play with and still digs like a lunatic. He digs everywhere! Around the house and barn foundation, the nice parts of the lawn, in the riding arena area, and what really ticks me off MY GARDEN! He cringes and hides in shame when you point out his holes but it never slows him down from his next big dig. Some dogs just love it!

I've tried the "poop" method and it does work. My Beagle loves to dig so everytime she would dig I'd get a scoop full of the "great Dane poop" and cover the hole. The beagle no longer digs. Unfortunately one of the Danes has started and as soon as the poop unfreezes I'll be putting in the holes and covering again. No mothballs-dog could eat it.

The poop method has always worked for me (unless the dog is a poop eater  ) and it's always been a convenient way to clean the yard...

I went out this morning, scooped the yard, tossed it in the hole and covered it over, guess we'll see what happens.
