The reason I was able to break free of the cult I was in (not being in too deep or long-term helped) was exactly what Tucker describes. You hear questions from outside (including former insiders), and you come up with questions on your own, and instead of being sat down and having those questions "reasonably" answered, you're told you can't ask questions like that; you're told that your heart isn't right with G_d; you're told that you need more bible study, prayer, meditation....people are even, often times, downright hostile toward you and your questions. The pressure to conform becomes almost overwhelming, and for some people, it actually is.
My father didn't like questions. If it wasn't that he didn't know the answer, then it was a challenge to his authority. Unwittingly, he prepared me well for dealing with that cult-like mentality, though not so much for the military, which is kind of cult, when you think about it. You know, shaved heads, everybody wearing the same outfits, parroting the same lines, and so on.
