Note: We just made our contribution to the Salvation Army on-line. While they have 5 on-line donation servers, they are all responding very slowly due to the large number of donations that are coming on. If you plan to make a donation, you may want to try the telephone or wait until later in the weekend when the load decreases.

St. Mary's Animal Welfare League

The St. Mary's Animal Welfare League is trying to rent a couple of cargo vans and pick up some animals. We will need assistance with finding foster/furever homes, medical care and basic care.

We will be picking up animals that have been surrendered, have lost their families, or have no hope of being reunited with their families. These animals will be looking for new furever homes. In the meantime, we need to find foster families to house these animals. If you’d like to help by either fostering or adopting an animal, please contact us at trailsendpetsitting@att.net or call 301-997-0002.

We also need monetary donations and supplies. All donations are tax deductible. Send monetary donations to:

SMAWL
PO Box 364
Mechanicsville, MD 20659

To designate that your donation be used for Katrina victims, label it “Katrina’s Kids.”

Iams Cat or kitten food

Scoopable cat litter

Research First, Donate Second

The following information is provided to help you make informed decisions regarding your Katrina donations and charitable giving in general.

According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal ("Katrina Prompts record Pace of Giving", 06-SEPT-2005, pp. D1), various charities have been releasing data about how efficiently they provide aid using the donations you send them. One example cited was that "the Red Cross says it spends $6 to prepare and deliver each meal." The "Salvation Army [...] says its cost per meal is $3."

The point is that it is wise to research how the charity of your choice will spend the money. Giving money is not enough. Be sure that who you give it to is accountable and will spend it wisely and for the purpose intended. All other things being equal, choose the charity that is the most efficient.

Some on-line sites to help you research the charities on your short list:
