This is pretty much a "worse case scenario" for New Orleans, a storm of this magnitude with a storm surge of over twenty feet impacting a city that has an elevation of 6ft below sea level. With the latest advisory (5 pm) winds have fluctuated to 165 mph, but the seas are already building and will likely be the most damaging part of the storm. I hope everyone is taking the evacuations seriously, even the President came out to express the seriousness of this situation.

Just as a comparison of how intense this storm is, using the current barometric pressure reading from within Katrina of 902 mb that puts her as the fourth strongest hurricane to ever be recorded in the Atlantic, NOT make landfall, just recorded! If she sustains this intensity when she comes on shore Katrina will be the second strongest recorded land fallinghurricane in the US. The leader is a 1935 unamed storm that hit the florida keys, its central pressure was 892mb.

Thank you, weathergirl, was wondering if you were gonna chime in.

Weather Channel showed it's size in comparison to hurricane Charlie and Katrina is a gigantic monster. NP, I wondered about the above ground gaves also and the sewage mess. One scenario has estimated thousands dead from the storm and water pollution in its aftermath.

I hope someone can get in touch with her, especially after it blows through. It's looking pretty grim in N.O. but as long as she is not in the city, hopefully she'll make it okay. :huggy:

You see the video of all the idiots sitting at the open bars on Bourbon Street right now? They are cheering the cameras and holding beers in each hand, etc... I think we could have a Mass Darwin Award by tomorrow.

I haven't seen that, but it doesn't surprise me. I guess they don't realize NOTHING is going to withstand 165+ MPH winds nor a storm surge of 25' or more. :dork:

I already made a mental note to tune in after 2:00 a.m. if I get up in the night, specifically to see if the village idiots are still visible. :loser:

I will stay tuned for the obvious reasons... but the diligent drunks warrant an extra incentive for a middle of the night peek....

Apparently, (at one point earlier) only one in six or so business owners were even doing anything in preparation - eg, boarding windows, making sand barriers, vacating the area or EVEN CLOSING DOWN THEIR ESTABLISHMENT...

Not to mention the tornados this storm has to be packing. I'm sure we’ll see a bunch of ding-a-ling news reporters getting batted around tomorrow.

Absolutely incredible. I haven't watched the news, but people like that are signing their own death warrant. It's an absolute shame but you can't save people from themselves when they're intent on self-destruction.

I saw a shot of that earlier tonight! But by 2:00am, what idiot camera crew/commentator would be out and about in those kinds of winds?!?

Never mind, I've seen 'em before! Leaning mightily into the winds, holding onto their hats, etc., trying to keep their footing. Saw a guy get hit by a gust, he actually tumbled over as the camera crew was shooting!

They went to a commercial.

Hey BuddyLee!!!!! I've got a great idea for a new carreer for ya!

Actually I wanted to be a cameraman when I was in middle school probably because they asked us what we wanted to be the rest of our lives and I had no idea.

What does everyone think?

Say the past 10-15 years we have had way too many bad storms even a few tornado's in La Plata. What is changing our weather?
