Hurt foot

I was on vacation this week and I just got my dog back from the sitters. I noticed her limping and checked out her foot and it looks like one of her toe nails is ripped really far back. Its not bleeding but its RED. I googled it and read a few things like clean it wrap it and see what happens and I read that I need to take her to the vet now. Ummm She is limping a little and licking it a little. Should I take her to the vet or just clean it and watch her to make sure it doesnt get infected?

This happened to my jack ass russell years ago.... I washed it out with a good first aid wash, applied neosporin and bandaged it everyday before he went to bed. It never became infected.... but then again it was his dew claw that was split in half, he managed to rip the other half off during the day. Since she has a limp I would take her to the vet, she seems to have discomfort.

i would take her to the vet it could already be infected if its red and shes limping to that tells me it has to hurt her. I wouldn't play around (but that is just me).

vet costs are horrible! almost $200 at the vet for some medicine to stop Fleas' diarrhea. I would clean it myself, keep it wrapped up with neosporin and keep an eye on it, if it gets worse, then def take her to a vet. Petco might have those booties. Which puppy was this? Reesy?

I had this happen once to my yorkie. She was jumping out the car and landed on her foot the wrong way. It broke her nail and was bleeding. I had to bring her to the vet to get it pulled. She was fine aftewards. Good Luck.

You are right that vet costs are high. But did it work!? poor Fleas (interesting name :yeah:)

As far as the nail. Keep it clean and if the nail breaks anymore you may what to take her in. Get some of the "vet-wrap" from petco and use some adhesive tape on the top so it does not slip off. That is what has worked for me when I had to wrap my puppy's foot with a cut.

oh and NEVER use peroxide to clean a cut!

I'm not saying you should.... but....

you can get a bottle of aqueous penicillin at most farm supply stores, such as TS, for $14 or so.... pick up a few needles.... and give the dog the appropriate dosage by weight if infection becomes indicated....

I treat all my dogs when they have physical injuries, unless it's serious surgery type stuff... never had a problem. Easier and cheaper to keep antibiotics and sutures on hand than run screaming to the vet for a relatively minor cut and shell out $800 for 4 sutures and a couple pills.
