"When John and Natasha Hogan embarked on a holiday to Crete with their two young children, they knew it would be make or break. Their marriage was in tatters. Mr Hogan was dogged by depression and it seemed like the last opportunity to salvage their family life.

As their time abroad became punctuated by bitter rows, it was clear that the trip had been a failure. But few could have predicted the events that followed.

It was when his wife began packing their suitcases for an early departure that Mr Hogan, 33, finally snapped. In a "moment of madness" he seized his six-year-old son and threw him to his death from their hotel balcony, before clutching his two-year-old daughter and hurling himself from the fourth-floor room. But yesterday Mr Hogan was cleared of all charges of murder and manslaughter because of his mental state."
