HVAC Question....Need Help

Just bought my first house a few months ago. My electric bill has been a little high so I have kept my A/C turned off over the past few days. This morning I noticed my central air unit outside running even though the air is turned off completely.

I came home and noticed it was still running......what could cause this?

NEED HELP!!!!! Thanks!!!!!!

Sounds like a control issue. Contator stuck as he said or could be a pinched wire on the t-stat, burnt relay holding the contact in. You could work your way back from the problem, if you know how you can remove the cover to expose the contactor, watch it as you or someone else turns off the power to the unit. If the contactor stays in thats your problem, if you see it pull out then it's probably a low voltage issue.

Is what you have outside only an AC unit or do you have a heat pump? If it is a heat pump and the thermostat in the house is calling for heat, that's why it is running..

Not fixed!!! My central air unit stays on regardless of whether or not my air or A/C is on or not.

Air doesnt come out of the vents unless I turn it on.....but the unit outside runs regardless

Sounds like the contactor at the unit is stuck shut.

Do you have a contact number for the original owners who may be able to shed some light on the situation. When funs become available, recommend you swap out your thermostat to a newer energy star digital one that is programmable. Available at Lowe's for about $80 bucks and cut my HVAC bill down by 30%.

On a side note, look into low voltage light bulbs in high use areas. bulb ratings are 60W = 13W and 75W = 15W. They also make them for the exterior of the home.

I shaved roughly $60 dollars per month on my electric bill until the evil owners of SMECO raised it's rates...
