I am hopping for a used car on eBay...

And I find a 2001 Saturn SL. The Check engine light is on. I messaged the dealer (Rosenthal Gaithersburg Mazda) and ask if they had scanned the codes. This is their response:

We did not pull any codes on the vehicle. The service engine soon is an indicator that a service (like an oil change) needs to be done. However, even if the service is done, the light stays on unless it is reset by a Saturn dealer. It is a way that manufactures try to encourage all customers to have scheduled service done at their dealerships.

How dumb do they think I am? CEL for an oil change? Light can only be reset by a Saturn dealer? Guess it will be on forever then since there are no longer any Saturn dealers.

They lost any chance of this guy buying any cars from them.

I know that all I had to do was go to autozone and they could have cleared it for me, but that is beside the point. They lied about something DUMB.

I just got off the phone with their used car sales manager.

Had they been straight with me, there is a REALLY good chance I would have bought the car. Not any more.

You might be confusing evil intent with ignorance. Quite often, dealership service departments are ignorant of their own product, let alone some other manufacturers products.

Not a lie, just simple ignorance, most likely. Heck, had the whole service department at Park tell me it was flat impossible to reflash a used PCM so that it would work in another car. Til I showed them right in the parking lot. Of course, they were only regurgitating what they were told. they were not lying, just ignorant.

Bottom line, when in doubt, ASK.

If it was something like it needed an O2 sensor replaced, that's no big deal. Depending on the price, it may have been worth it for a drive it till it dies commuter car.
