I need a new cellphone.

My contract with Cingular expires Sept. 10th. I am planning to leave because I have too many dropped calls and disconnects and call fails in Southern Maryland.

Well I went from wanting a Blackberry to the Treo to the new Sidekick and II went in to Cingular Saturday to see which of these phones they have. They only have Treo. They told me if I buy the Sidekick on my own it will have to be an unlocked phone and that some of the features may not work.

So, out of curiosity I asked what they had similar to the Sidekick and they showed me this. They have it for $199 with a 2yr contract. I am not sure if this phone is strong enough to keep my calls from dropping and what not.

What say you forumites?

We don't really get dropped calls here. The only bad area that I always lose someone is from 235 stoplight to the bridge going to Solomons and usually going up to Leonardtown. We both have the Motorola v551. The only reason that we really like it, is that we can get Cingular up in rural WA where we have property. But if you are unhappy I'd say try someone else. We aren't here for the long haul, so Cingular suits our needs perfect.

Avoid the Treo 650 - bad battery and I don't think it can be replaced without replacing the entire phone.

Do you plan on going to verizon ?

I use to have a blackberry, and I regret not keeping it. I would use it more than ever now. The pricing was right and wasnt to expensive.

I would go with one of verizons EVDO phones... just my .02

I definitely get the disconnect on Pax Bch Rd right before or after the church depending on the way you're coming. I think it's a dead spot. But, I am getting dropped calls in my house now. I don't know what is going on and yesterday it kept giving me an error message where my call wouldnt go through. I have the motorola V220.

I have Directv w/a Verizon discount, Verizon telephone, Verizon DSL, so it seems only right to have cellular service through them too. I did want the blackberry and then I saw the Treo and wanted that and now I've seen the Sidekick 3, but also that PDA phone on the link above seems pretty sweet. I will look into the EVDO phones. Thanks! :huggy:

BTW, I have Cingular and either will stay with them or go with Verizon depending on the phone. I don't want to go to a totally new company.

Discounts with verizon is always nice.. I have one with the company I work for... Cingular has VERY cool phones, but I know there service isnt the best... Living in a metro area (dc,nova, b-more) is something different. I am not a big fan of the treo's but that is me. What you might want to check is with whoever you work for, they may have a BES server ( Blackberry Enterprise Server) Where you can have your email from work goto it as well, you can add a blackberry.net email acct as well as personal ones. I love the thing and its not to big IMO... But like I said I know numerous people that have a bberry for data, and then evdo phone for phone calls. I use to have a sidekick II, was awesome I loved it... 30 bucks a month unlimited data, you couldnt beat it...

Keep in mind that you need specific phones to work on the Verizon cell network. Cingular, etc. use GSM phones and Verizon uses CDMA phones. I don't think that there is such a thing as a CDMA Sidekick.

I'm pretty sure that I'm going with the Blackberry 7130e at the end of August (that's when my "new every two" comes up). That is unless I can figure out how to tether a Motorola Q or XV6700 to a laptop...

Just did a google search for "verizon xv6700 tether windows" and found a ton of stuff (secret codes, etc.) to make it work. XV6700 it is!

Since you have so many items through Verizon, I would definitely check on a discount if you sign on with a cell phone. I know that in OK, we were able to save a percentage because we allowed them to combine our bill (I think it was the tv, phone, and cell phones). The only thing is you have to be diligent about checking the bill, but nowadays, you should be diligent about that anyhow. Case in point, Cingular for some reason charged me double for text messages, but the only way I caught it was reading through my whole bill.

If you stick with Cingular, have you seen their "new" PDA phone? I say "new" because it's been out for at least 6 months. I have this for work, and if you plan to use this mostly as a PDA, it's fantastic. It's like the Sidekick in that it is can flip horizonal and is very easy to type with. You also need a 3rd party email pusher, such as www.good.com to get the email/contacts/calendar constantly pushed back and forth to your phone.

I don't love it for a phone, particularly with driving. You can't scroll numbers like a typical cell phone, you must get the numbers from your contact list with a stylist. Not good when driving! The only work around here is the bluetooth headset and voice command, which I use and it works well. But don't get this if you mostly want a phone with the pda/internet/wifi capability for occassional use.

Otherwise, I have my Verizon Razr phone for personal use and love it!

Me and the wife both have Treos and we're both extremely happy with them. I have the odler 600, she has the 650. Pretty sure the non-replaceable battery problem is with the 600 and not the 650, but I don't have hers handy to look at. But in two years with my 600 and the 1 year she's had the 650 neither of us has gotten to the point where we ran out of electricity, and we both use our phones for phone and internet a LOT.

I have no experience with any other smartphone like the others mentioned in this thread.
