Nice to see he cleaned up the unibrow for the photo. But every math wiz that I have ever known, also had no common sense. This neanderthal solved a problem that has gone unsolved for 100 years, and turned down the One Million dollar (US currency) prize that goes along with it. With A million bucks, even THAT ugly mo-fo should have been able to find a good lookin Russian Bride.

There may be another reason. There's almost a long running tradition of plagiarism in the world of Russian mathematics. Declining a prize would be a good way of gaining notoriety without anyone scrutinizing the work that got him a million dollars.

I'm really disinclined to believe all that many people are altruistic. My guess is there's another reason. Maybe he's getting divorced.

The article didn't say he declined the money. It just said that he didn't show up to the event to get the award (medal).

CNN said:
But besides shunning the medal, academic colleagues say he also seems uninterested in a separate, $1 million prize he might be awarded for his feat.

Ball, the guy hosting the event, said the guy declined the medal, but didn't say he spoke to him. So, he could've just not shown up.
