#10. Weird Memorabilia

The other day I got a catalog from a Christian book store chain promoting their new Easter products. One of the items you could buy was a "crown of thorns." For a mere $49.95 you could own a crown for your desk? Your mantle? Where do you properly store/display a crown of thorns? Do you think the Roman soldiers that made it at the time said to each other, "You know, some day this is going to make a really sweet paper weight." But what can I say, when it comes to Easter and Christmas but shut your mouth not Halloween, we love us some weird memorabilia.

 A pal of mine used to have some oddball stuff. Like a big cross that was made to conform to your hand like it had been molded with warm wax. I was always wary....

I don't find any of those particularly strange, coming from the culture that invented the Pet Rock.

And don't forget about those healing crystals.

Actually, this has been going on for quite some time. Thus the reason for Christ's reaction:

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the benches of those selling doves,

and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.

And as he taught them, he said, Is it not written: 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers'.

The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Yikes! Sounds like Capitalism to me! lol

It is unfortunate though that the Free Gift of God has become a merchandiser's dream and turned into a profit-making venture.

Not to start another debate here but I would have to say that so many of our churches are geared towards profit rather than souls. It is so hard to find a church today that isn't (IMHO).

Agreed.
I would also call any and all collections used by deceptive religious leaders who claim they use the money "for God's work" as nothing but False Profits!
