McAwful is going to win that election and that's too bad. Glen Youngkin would have made a good Governor for them.
I wouldn't be so sure about that.
My wife's business office is in the old town section of Alexandria, just off King St. I can tell you in no uncertain terms, the Youngkin signs in that area outnumber the McAuliffe signs by a large factor. This is in a decidedly Democrat town where Trump did not do well AT ALL, in either '16 or '20. Granted, it's but a small enclave in the larger Commonwealth, but if there are this many supporters in
this part of Alexandria, then that doesn't bode well for Terry. Of course, I have no idea of the sentiment out in Fairfax, etc. But we
know how things go outside of NOVA.
Granted this is "gut feel" type stuff, so take it with a grain of salt. Further, Youngkin is from the Carlyle Group, formerly HQ'd in Alexandria and there is
lots of support there for that company, in fact, many employees live there I've been told. So that could be a factor in the apparent fervent support.
The Financial Times ran a piece this past week discussing this particular race, characterizing it as the first electoral test of Joe Biden, what being an off-year gubernatorial election. McAuliffe screwed the pooch royally with the quote that's running on TV, in the DC Metro market, "Parents have no right to tell schools what to teach kids", or something to that effect[1]. It's not translating well at all.
Anyway, we will see.
[1]. Actually, McAuliffe isn't wrong. Run for school board where you
can have your say, send your kids to private school, where you can have a choice of finding school more in line with your ethos. Or homeschool. Otherwise, you truly don't have a say. If you choose government schooling, you take what you get and that's that. But the sentiment just doesn't fare well. And on a political landscape, I understand.
