You're an idiot.

Socki- First off, yay for you for wanting to go towards a degree. Like everyone else said, DEF fill out a FASFA, it can be done online. Do it ASAP so that you can get your funding by the Fall Semester...
There are SOME online places that look better than others, but it is a really self motivating process. If you can do some in class courses, I would reccomend that over online if you feel self motivation might be an issue. GOOD LUCK!! and doooo it! :yay:
Where did you get your degree from? Phoenix Online. I RECOMMEND (spelled correctly) that you learn how to spell.

The Pell Grant is also based on income, right? I may not qualify. As far as Ashworth College, how recognized are they? Meaning, do employers really take online degrees for real?
Ashworth College is a self paced courses all online and is an accredited school according to Charles County Board of Ed. They are paying for my friend to attend. One semester is $1200.00 including books and they have a payment plan of $48.00 a month. Doing some researching and falling on my face the last two years - UMUC for a course (3 credits) costs around $1250.00 for the course and about $300 -$500 for books for ONE course. CSM is partnered with UMUC and if you take the classes through CSM/UMUC they only cost and $850.00 for a course and the books are still outrageous - $300 - $400 depending on the course. Another thing is the books go out of CSM circulation every two years. It would be great if they would give you a discount according to your GPA. I have maintained a GPA of 4.0 for 4 years. - Yes I am proud of myself, since I hated school growing up and I did the minimal to just get by. - Yes kiddies it does come back and bite you in the behind - big time!!!! Take it from someone who knows - go to school to learn not socialize and party. The education you are screwing with you will need it when you get older.

Here is the link to Ashworth - Ashworth University - Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, High School Diploma, Career Training Courses

If any one is looking for books, contact me I have a ton - they are clean and no highlighter used or pens. :flowers:

If you're awarded a Pell Grant, it pays based on the school and the number of credits you take.

I get just over $2000 in Pell Grants per semester. MD is now throwing in $1800 a year, and I made the Dean's List, so I'm up for additional funding. The $2000 a semester pays for 4 classes, their books, and still leaves me about $300 coming back to me.

I know someone that does that. She spends the bare minimum so that she can pocket the rest of the money. I think that any unused money should go back into the fund so that more grants may be given. I know someone that lives off of the excess money. Really sickens me that people get turned down for these things because they make pennies over the maximum but people are being allowed to keep the leftover funds. That is pure crap.

... I take 4 classes, and buy all my books brand new (not used). If you'd like to find the address I can send my funds back to, I'm more than happy to do so. Student Loans and Grants are also to be used for school supplies and child care while you attend school.

Some people abuse it. I don't feel that, by taking 12 credits every semester, I'm taking the minimum. 15 is if someone goes full time, but 12 is more average. I can manage 12 credits at a time and maintain my 4.0, which means everything to me.

But, you already know it doesn't work that way, so why be hard on others. It's their money. They applied for it, they were granted it, they were given the excess. It's theirs...
I'm not being hard on others. I think that it is wasteful of the program. It should snatch all remaining funds.

If it works that way, then yes. I'd rather someone else have the money to further their education rather than waste it. That's the God's honest truth.

what about gas money get to school. What about the cost of internet to take online courses:shrug:
$300 is hardly a windfall amount.:cartwheel

I want to go back to school soon to get my degree. I've taken courses here and there but never followed through with a degree. For the most part, I've been doing bookkeeping and admistrative work for the past 13 years. I like my work but I'm never going to earn my worth without a degree. I was thinking of going to get an AA in Business Management. I am going to start out with a certificate in Office Technologies. I am getting older and am now feeling the need for a piece of paper.

Everyone knows that I am a single mom so it is going to be tough. I was thinking of taking online courses to start out. But, I'm not sure if I'm disciplined enough. I've always been better in a classroom setting. But, I don't think that it's possible for me to work 2 jobs and go to classes a few times a week. I'm also not sure if that's fair to my kids. Although, in the end, it's benefiting them tremendously.

Any advice on this?
Good luck, Socki.....:huggy:

That's the point of these programs.

It's not only to pay for your books and tuition, but they also take into account your rent, childcare, gas, food... etc..etc..

I never got grants, but I always got a few thousand extra in loans every semester, helped with the bills and mortgage.

I wish you the best of lucky. I am going to start going back to school next year. Just some basic classes. I rather pay more to do it online because of gas and if my Hubby can't watch the kids because he has to work late. it would be nice to just get away to go to class. A nice break from the kids but that will not happen till they are in school. Lol! I hope things work out for you.

Good luck with going back to school. I also thought of doing this as well. I never understood why it's so much harder for married people to get grants etc. for school. A friend of mine was doing online stuff at CSM, she got married before she was finished and as soon as they knew she was married they didn't give her any money. She felt as though she should have lied about her marital status. Am I wrong about being married and receiving very little to no help? Just because you have 2 incomes does not mean you can afford it. JMO.

They base it off of income and number of dependents. If her income doubled when she got married, then it would stand to reason (from a purely financial standpoint) that she doesn't need the free money anymore. She would've still been eligible for, at the very least, Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loans. Every college student is eligible for those, even if they must be paid back.

Doesn't even pay the rent.. MAYBE childcare and food
It does when your family watches your kids, you're on food stamps, AND you don't pay rent.

But, I should not have even posted about this. I never looked at it as paying for gas and childcare.

... ok, the person you know who got $1000 back and gets food stamps, doesn't pay rent, and has family care for the kids obviously abused the system.

Maybe 10% do that, if we're guessing on the high side.

90% use it to offset rent, childcare, and gas while they go to school.

Socki, if you do end up getting student loans, try not to get much more than you'll actually need. You might think the extra money is nice, but it's not nice to pay back. :dead:
