I'd heard of seeing-eye dogs, but I'd never...

heard of witness-comfort dogs before.

By Helping a Girl Testify at a Rape Trial, a Dog Ignites a Legal Debate

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Rosie, the first judicially approved courtroom dog in New York, was in the witness box here nuzzling a 15-year-old girl who was testifying that her father had raped and impregnated her. Rosie sat by the teenager’s feet. At particularly bad moments, she leaned in.

...

Rosie is a golden retriever therapy dog who specializes in comforting people when they are under stress. Both prosecutors and defense lawyers have described her as adorable, though she has been known to slobber.

Prosecutors here noted that she is also in the vanguard of a growing trial trend: in Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana and some other states in the last few years, courts have allowed such trained dogs to offer children and other vulnerable witnesses nuzzling solace in front of juries.

oh yeah! they use therapy dogs with kids for comfort in many situations!
The dogs dont judge and will gain the trust in the kids before any adult can.... they will have the kids talk directly to the dogs instead of the adults.

They use them with abuse cases as well…. Seeing most kids will be afraid of talking to anyone.

I think it is wonderful. Dogs are such special creatures, they are just so sensitive. My childhood pup ALWAYS knew when I was sad or upset. And a lot of therapists' offices have animals (esp child therapists) to make people feel comfortable and relaxed.

My mom's former boss would bring in his black lab to work everyday. Said it calmed his employees down and productivity went up because they weren't as stressed.

Isn't is amazing how perceptive dogs are? I think it's a great idea for the victims to have comfort while on the stand.

I know my dogs can sense when I'm sick or injured. :yay:

My son had an appointment at Walter Reed neurology last Friday and there was a boy in there with his "seizure" dog. His mom said the dog alerts her before her son even begins to seize. How in the hell do they know? It's so remarkable!

they can detect low blood sugar and have been known to detect cancer as well...so neat!
