It's much much much cheaper, as in free, to simply lock down your credit at all three credit reporting agencies. When you need something that requires a credit check, such a a mortgage or credit card, you can unlock them for an allotted time of your choosing. Such as one day, one week or longer, then it will automatically lock it down after your chosen time frame.

But that takes work and time. Something many people simply do not want to do for themselves.
