Who the eff told microsoft it could go ahead and upgrade my Internet Explorer to IE9 without any warning whatsoever?

You have your windows update setting set to "install automatically" rather than "alert me".

I never let it load anything on it's own. I always pick the patches and updates, and specifically turned off (right-click on the item, select 'remove') any IE upgrades.

Well, crap. Is there an undo option? I do not like IE9!!!

I believe, because I don't have IE 9 installed, you can go into Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features in Win 7), highlight IE 9 and you should get options to uninstall. It should allow you to remove IE9 and revert to the previous version.

Thank you! You are now one of my heroes! I had to go into Programs and Features and then into Installed Updates to find the damned thing. It is now uninstalled and I am back to something that makes sense to me for now.

Since I appear to be the *&%$ing idiot who gave them permission, I have revoked that permission and now must authorize all updates.

There are days when I really, really, really hate technology, even though I'm considered a techie geek by my friends,

(and that's only because they know less than I do... :roflmao:)

Again, thanks!

Welcome. Glad you found it.

I'm an IT geek by profession, but I'd gladly chuck it all to return to a job on the water. I've been doing this for over 30 years, and it's gotten very old. When you work with it all day long, the tech projects you want to do at home just don't have the same thrill.

:yeahthat:

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I uninstalled it and went back...

Can you tell me what you specifically hate about it in case it comes down my way?

All of a sudden everything but the address bar and about 3 or 4 new icons disappeared. Took me about 10 minutes to find out where my favorites were & managed to restore the favorites bar but couldn't find anywhere to click on toolbars or any of that other fun stuff. I'm in the middle of a big project at work that entails getting familiar with another computer program so I didn't have the patience or time to figure it out, even though I probably could have if I was given enough time or some forwarning so I could look up resources. Plus, I've been hearing mixed reviews about IE 9 anyway so I wasn't inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I guess the major thing is that it's not real intuitive or user-friendly when you first look at it. That's a major no-no in my book!

Damn stupid thing trashed my computer! After about 10 hours total of trying everything I know, I'm headed to the shop with it on Monday. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Multiple times, multiple restore points, sigh. Had it back for a bit & then it went back to the blue screen messages. Considering that I might somehow have picked up a virus, even with mcafee.
I wouldn't use Mcaffee or Norton if they were free for life but, that aside, is it under any warranty? Can you call MS tech support? The blue screen is bad news anytime. Hope they fix it for you asap.

Before you go to the shop, run CHKDSK. Try booting in Safe Mode, then run CHKDSK with the 'fix errors' option. Sometimes you get lucky.

When we have IE errors at work, it's just far easier to recover the data, then wipe and reload the PC from scratch. Not worth the effort trying to unscrew IE problems.

Out of warranty unfortunately. Did do an uninstall of McAfee with customer support chat when I thought that might be part of the problem.

I actually did do this at one point when I had it back -- seemed to be fixed, ran a virus scan and then it went down again somewhere after about 80 percent was done. To the shop I go for the backup & reinstall as I'm not up to those skill levels. After this I'm thinking of going for the Microsoft tech training
