I hear so many amazing stories of soldiers with the children in Iraq from people that are there and hardly any ever seem to get heard on tv. It has the power to sway public opinion but chooses to be ignored.

He's using that child as a shield while his older brother tries to tackle him.

I know your intent is to show us a an Iraqi boy hugging a soldier. However, let's look at context.

Notice the concentration of people in the immediate area? Notice the many people running in the opposite direction from which the soldier is facing? Notice all the debris on the ground? Does this kid look like he's hugging the soldier, or hiding behind him?

My money says this is yet another picture that is being spread around that actually depicts a negative scenario, but is spun to simulate a positive one.

Honestly, I do believe that there are examples of good news to report in Iraq. However, this scene didn't come from one of 'em. :ohwell:

Something bad happened like a car bomb went off. Who does the boy feel safe with? It appears an American soldier, something had to make him feel that the American soldier would protect him and keep him safe. He obviously isn't running from the soldier.

Yeah...that's exactly what my point is. A car/suicide vest bomb went off, and the boy is hiding behind the soldier. I suppose you can say that picture represents something "good"...the boy is scared and feels safer behind the soldier. However, this is hardly the feel-good scenario that it's being spun to be.

Well the fact that he sees the soldier as the one of the "good guys" should tell you something.

I believe all the violance in Iraq is a civil war caused by the power vaccum left from Saddam. People that had no freedom or no hope of getting any of that power for themselves suddenly are not oppressed any more and those that are power hungry see this is the time that they can grab it. Saddam was successful in keeping these things happen because he was more brutal and had more resources than the insurgents now could ever have. We could keep stuff like this from happening if we too used Saddam like tactics but even though you refuse to believe it we are the good guys.

I have never even hinted that we are the "bad" guys. EVER. however, since nobody responsible for this mess will come out and tell us what our new definition of "victory" is...we, as citizens, just have to try and suss it out on our own.

My opinion? Maybe it does takes a dictator, or an occupying, heavy-handed militaristic force to prevent all these opposing forces from keeping Iraq from being what it currently is. Maybe it takes a divisional republic (Biden's plan), with our military presence playing police. I'm thinking that's our best remaining option. However, the Iraqi's are opposed to it. So then what?

We are certainly not the "bad guys"...but we have exploded a "stabilized" country into what it is today, and nobody in charge seems to have the slightest idea how to put Humpty Dumpty back together.

You're perception of the child hiding from danger is 100% correct but you're spin on that photo is the result of the hatred you have of our armed forces.
