UC Berkeley scholar apologizes for being 'White' after identifying as Native American

Berkeley academic Elizabeth Hoover declares she will 'put away my dance regalia, ribbons skirts, moccasins, and Native jewelry' amid alleged revelations about her true ancestry

University of California, Berkeley, one of the most famous colleges in California, faces a firestorm of controversy after one of its academics admitted she was mistaken about her racial background, after appearing to benefit from it for years.

On Monday, UC Berkeley professor Elizabeth Hoover apologized for being a "white person who has incorrectly identified as Native my whole life."

Hoover, an Ivy League-educated expert on environmental health and food justice in Native American communities, further apologized for causing harm by "uncritically living an identity based on family stories without seeking out a documented connection to these communities."

"Family stories". It's always the same crap. If you were a counter-culture berkely type in California in the 60s you claimed Native blood. They all lied about it. So most likely one of her parents claimed to be Indian because it was cool and she ran with it.

This woman likely received 10s of thousand worth of "breaks" in her life by claiming this. Tuition assistance, grant money, etc. How did she approve her faux "heritage?" Do they even check for it anymore??

Don't you think it's strange that this nation can be so irredeemably racist that someone has to apologize for taking advantage of benefits afforded her by claiming to be Native American?

Not saying that there wasn't anything in the past - nor does it say that they have it any easier - but what kind of racist nation offers benefits to Native Americans and considers it shameful to pretend to be one, to get them?

Other nations and places we've gone, if people are racist, they're not the slightest bit ashamed of being so, nor do they suffer any social harm from it.

They check for official federal government programs, need to have official tribal enrollment, have a BIA tribal card, or have a certificate degree of Indian blood. From an officially recognized tribe.

UCB may not check for their own programs or school enrollment.

You know, I do have to add THIS much - LOTS of people beliee they have SOME Native American blood. For example, the story in my OWN family tree is that my great-great grandfather adopted a Cherokee girl and raised her as his own - and that would make me one eighth Cherokee. If you'd ever seen my grandfather, you could easily believe he was half Native American.

As I understand, if you can PROVE ancestry to Cherokee back about a few generations, you might be allowed to claim it.

But DNA tests show nothing, not in me, not in my siblings. While I am as white as snow, my sisters both have darker hair, eyes and an olive tone to their skin - since my older sister was actually born in Puerto Rico, she used to claim to be Hispanic, even though she's not. My younger sister once worked at the Turkish embassy, and people, thinking she was Turkish, marvelled at her command of English.

When I lived in Massachusetts, a woman I dated claimed to be like 1/16th Blackfoot. I said it was amazing, and she answered nah, everyone I know says they're 1/16th Blackfoot.

Until DNA testing came along and genealogy records became common, I think this was true of a LOT of people.

But see, people I know who are Italian - or Irish - or Polish - or Russian or German - they claim it back maybe ONE OR TWO generations. Because they still have a grandma who speaks German or Gaelic. And they went to a church or community growing up that affirmed it. Even should I turn out to actually be an eighth Cherokee, so the hell what? I'm not Cherokee anymore than I am Martian - I wasn't raised as one and I know almost nothing about them.

Why is it acceptable to "identify" as some things you are not, but not others? Perfectly ok for a man to identify as a woman, and everyone else must accept it and go along with the charade, but God forbid you identify as a another race or ethnicity.

My family has stories of Mohawk ancestry. DNA test results showed a possibility.
That prompted me to hire a professional researcher who has staff who specialize in old French records in Canada.
They found out the Lore was true, but the ancestry was not as close as my great grandmother's mother, who was supposed to be 100% Mohawk.
I have a 4th great grandmother who was Mohawk, a 6th who was Cree and an 8th who was Huron.
The information was in old French fur trade company records.

I have an aunt that we don't believe was the right baby because she is very different looking than everyone else.

That’s where they put the grilled cheese sandwiches.
If they don't have a senior menu, I do sometimes pick the kid's menu. I'm tired of not completing a meal at a restaurant, and I don't enjoy shoving food in my gullet just because it's on the plate. Most restaurants just serve too much food.

I'm the opposite of this. For the prices we pay I expect to have leftovers. I like leftovers (with a few exceptions of things that just don't reheat well). When we go to Longhorn I will usually order the larger ribeye because by the time I eat the bread, my salad, and part of everything else I still have enough leftovers for at least 4 meals, maybe more, depending on how I re-do it at home.

Go to The Front Porch in Leonardtown. You won't get too much there and you can leave hungry and happy.

I have the utter opposite of THAT - it's because they charge so much for a steak or fries, that I want the minimum. Instead of paying a LOT and still be paying for a second overpriced meal, I minimize it - saving my money and my second meal is a more sumptuous one I make myself.

It's a rare thing that what I eat out exceeds my or my wife's culinary skills. We eat out to relax and avoid the work.

When I was going to Lognhorn the 1st thing I did was ask to see the Kitchen Manager - to the confusion of the Waitress - and custom order a RibEye 1 3/4 to 2 inches thick ...

well how many oz is do you want

I don't know, cut the damn thing and weight it

anyway a nice huge think Ribeye

Now my wife just buys a rib roast at the grocery store, slow cooks that basically making Prime Rib, then we finish on grill that I get a much better steak

ofc now the rib roast is $ 95 bucks when not on sale
