IL to Spend $1B on Medicaid for Undoc Seniors

Illinois is forecasting that its program to provide healthcare to undocumented immigrants will cost the state $1 billion in 2024 – far more than the $2 million that Illinoisans were promised.

Unfortunately, this estimate was completely uninformed, with the program exceeding that in its first month.

Since then, the program has grown to include people as young as 42, causing enrollment and costs to balloon.

Obama changed the rules on medicaid to allow more people on it and get people insured so the uninsured numbers dropped.

What happens to people that have company provided insurance when they retire?

I imagine they sold this to the people saying "hey, we have to treat them at the ER now. Not allowed to turn anyone away at the ER, so we're already paying for their healthcare. This way they can get preventative medicine and less costly doctor visits and not clog up the ER".

Which kinda makes sense. Except that once they have medicare coverage instead of only treating major illness (because most people don't want to go to the ER for minor things even if it's their only option) they can go and get everything treated. The ER wasn't going to replace that hip or pull your teeth and give you dentures.

And of course it probably encouraged sick individuals to relocate for the healthcare coverage.

Thats one of the biggest and most overlooked parts of government employment, the ability to keep your health insurance after retirement.
I spoke with a USAA Medicare Advantage sales person who reviewed what GEHA offers, now and after retirement. It will be our Medicare supplement. My Mrs. is also a 70% disabled vet, gets her primary care at the VA.
