I'm guessing

Remi is suffering from arthritis, or possibly hip dysplasia. However, tonight she is not using her right rear leg at all. I hate to make her jump the 3 stairs we have to the outside.

I'm going to look for some glucosimine when we make a trip to the petstore, but that will probably not be until next weekend. I'm hoping that she will be better in the morning and just hit it just right, and tomorrow I'll feel dumb for posting. :crossingfingers:

Here's a question: Is it bad to give her ibuprofen?? Just one to help ease the pain. She could barely get up out of bed to go outside. If she is sore tomorrow should I put heat or cold on it?? She has a lump that has popped up within the last couple of weeks also.

Sounds like a check-up w/the vet is in order. Let him/her do their job; don't try to play doctor for your pet unless you have the education to do so. :yay:

We give our greyhounds glucosimine bought at Walmart. The same kind you would buy for people. One of our greys had a horrible limp when we got him. No one wanted him because of this limp. We took him in for xrays and they found that he had a torn ACL that was never repaired. This was the cause of the end of his racing career. anyway....after 6 months of glucosimine he no longer walks with a limp.

I've used glucosamine on my elderly pets with great results, but don't expect overnight results. It takes awhile to work. I don't think Ibuprofen is good for dogs. My vet always recommended giving them baby Aspirin.

Less than one regular strength ibuprofen (200mg) could cause stomach ulcers in a 10lb dog, and about six could cause kidney failure. One extra strength acetominophen tablet (500mg) can cause severe liver damage to a 10lbs dog. One half of a regular strength naproxen (200mg) could cause stomach ulcers in the same size dog.

With that said...What a beautiful Dobe! My Boo-a 105 lb. male black Dobe would love her! I give my boy a whole 5 grain aspirin tablet once a day with no problem, BUT I would check with your vet. BTW-how old is she? I feel your pain for her! :huggy:

No one truly knows how widespread hip dysplasia is in the Doberman population but it seems to be much less prevalent than in many other purebreds. It is rare in the very top quality dobermans but somewhat more common in the rest. Fortunately, hip dysplasia in Dobermans has been on the decline in recent years thanks to the diligent efforts of reputable breeders.

:yikes: Do NOT make that assumption on your own... yeah, it may end up being arthritis, but it could also be Lymes or it could be hookworm, it could be... etc. etc. etc.

I'd get her checked out by a vet first. Like Kwillia said, it could be anything. My old lab mix looked as if he was on his last legs..he could barely move. He was diagnosed with Erlichia, which is similar to Lyme. There is a great pain medication called Metacam, which is non-steroidal and works very well for the days when the pain is bad.

When our Golden was older, I gave him a 325 mg buffered aspirin twice a day (recommend by our vet) and this helped him. All meds can have a toxic effect over time, even aspirin. You have to weigh the age, life expectancy and quality of life.

Some of the glucosamine formulas can cause diarrahea and other gastro problems but not all dogs have problems with this.

Good luck. It's hard to watch them age and hurt.

When our chow Taz started having problems with his hind legs about a year before he died the vet recommended Synovi G3. It has glucosamine in it and other vitamins etc. You sprinkle it on their food and they love it. I have almost a full cannister of it left. Its not cheap stuff. Your welcome to it. Just tell me when we can meet up and it's yours. Within a week we could see the difference!

IS THE DOG LIMPING ON A FRONT LEG??????? Is he lethargic and/or refusing to eat or drink?

I have an older dog that presented w/these symptoms last WINTER and immediately took him to the Vet! He already has some arthritis in his rear hips and I thought it was a sign he also had it in the front! Come to find out he had LYMES DISEASE! I couldn't believe it! He even gets the Lymes Vaccine every year and the Vet said that it's not 100%! $300.00 later and several medications...within a 24 hour period this dog was back acting like a pup!

As for the aspirin....I give my ole' guy Bufferin! The Vet recommended this on days he's moving sore. Not regular aspirin because it's hard on the tummy but BUFFERED! It really helps him on those stiff days!

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for all of the posts you guys!! I actually had another dobe that had hip dyslasia, he died when he was 12 1/2 (the oldest dobe that we had, which we attributed to Fresh Factors (a tablet with glucostimine)). We adopted Remi a little over a year ago. The previous owner told us that she was 4, but my experience with dobes instintively told me she was 6 or older. We took her, she was "free". Vet said she was around 8-10, so that puts her around 9 or 10.

I would be a lot more worried if she were showing other signs, we have had a lot of experience with Lyme's Disease, Eurlykia, Spotted Rocky Mountain Fever, you almost name it, and between my mom and I, we've had a dog with it. She is eating with her regular vaccum-like gusto, playing with Bandit, not lethargic, no diarrhea.

I'm going to get Suz's stuff today and see how it goes. She was doing better with it today. :yay:

I don't have an answer but I just wanted to say your dog is beautiful. I hope she feels better soon.
