An Idaho family is thankful its dog is alive this holiday, after a Teton County sheriff's deputy shot the animal three times in its front yard.

Bobby the dog survived three rifle shots by a Teton County, Idaho, deputy (courtesy KIDK-TV)

"I'm here to put him down. I'm here to kill him," is what the officer said last week, according to the pet's owner, Leo Barboza.

The family, which has had Bobby for the past five years, explained the story to the local CBS affiliate, KIDK-TV in Idaho Falls.

The officer reportedly told Barboza there was a complaint that Bobby had bitten someone.

Barboza recounted: "I said, 'Do you have any proof or anything?' He says, 'I don't need any proof.'"

The family thought so much of the dog, but the father calmly walked out with the officer and tied the dog to a tree, when the family returned from the hospital a few days later.----I guess the hospital was a long way away---Nobody thought to bury the dog, they just left it laying under the tree??

The story dosnt make a lot of sense as written. Cops showing up at the door he used a rifle to shoot the dog in front of the family instead of taking it somewhere else to do the dirty work. Where was his side arm?

Really weird story.

I do not believe that story. Notice it's all the family of the dog and not one word from the cop? Obviously there is more to the story and WND didn't feel inclined to share.
