input on upconverting DVD players/recorders. I want to be able to record DVD's from VHS and the old Sony camcorder so I can clear out some clutter.

I bought a Panasonic DVD recorder 4 years ago and converted all my VHS tapes to DVD easily. The video recorded plugged right into the back of it (in the analog input jacks) and recorded very well. It took months but it was worth it. :howdy:

I bought a Samsung VHS/DVD combination player/recorder. There are others from other manufacturers; Phillips comes to mind.

Insert tape. Make sure it is rewound.
Insert new DVD-R, -RW, (+R, +RW)
push one button.
Close DVD.

You can be more selective/crestive and store more than one tape on a DVD if you want.

Do you get better playback quality through an upconverting as opposed to a standard DVD player? or Is it all hype?

Playback can only be as good as the original source unless you go through some very sophisticated video and audio processing and upconverting only changes the resolution. If you have HD TV, that can change from standard NTSC 720 X 480 to some HD resolution, 1280 x 720, or 1920 x 1080. If you don't have HD, there is no advantage at all.

You'll also stop any more deterioration of the picture quality by converting to DVD
