The man who attacked an elderly street vendor known as "Grandma" was sentenced for the 2005 beating caught on videotape. James Dorsey was sentenced to 14 years in jail on Thursday.

The 47-year-old beat and robbed 84-year-old Vasiliki Fotopoulous in May 2005 near the Foggy Bottom Metro station, where she sold t-shirts and umbrellas.

Dorsey's attorney had asked Judge Herbert Dixon to consider a lesser sentence because of Dorsey's mental health, and asked the judge to resist temptation to make Dorsey the scapegoat for D.C.'s recent crime wave. But Judge Dixon said that Dorsey's criminal record dating back to 1979, the fact that Dorsey stalked Fotopoulous and the devastating effect the attack had on her was enough to warrant the 14-year sentence.

Fotopoulous sat in the courtroom with her family as Dorsey's sentence was handed down. The family thanked police and the citizens who came forward with information about Dorsey and said the city was now a little bit safer.

Did y'all see the tape? Man it was unmerciful, here's hoping James and Bubba git aquainted in lock-up real soon! :yay:

It is beyond me how lawyers can defend these kind of people. How do they sleep at night? I guess 10k makes it easier to sleep but only because the morals of some people can be bought.

Great! But some really 'smart, compassionate' people on a parole board will have him out in 2 years. Gotta make room for those evil pot smokers don't cha know.

Anyone accused of a crime in this country has the right to legal counsel. A defense attorney does more than try to get obviously guilty people acquitted. They guide the accused through the legal process and help to win him fair sentencing. I suspect the lawyer in this case was a public defendant. They work long hours and receive very little pay for their efforts.

And many times they just want to win their case and could care less if they enable a rapist to go free and rape some more.

Sorry. Most defense attorneys are the lowest of the low.

What are they supposed to do? Even the scum of the earth are entitled to an attorney.

That's like saying "most Jews are cheap" or "most blacks eat fried chicken and watermelon". It's a horribly uneducated and misinformed opinion.

A bit strong on the wording there C17, whew! I met Vrai, she is educated and informed.
As for the thread, unfortunately, bad lawyers get all the press. The funky little laws that some use to scheme with were made to keep thousands of innnocent people (mostly Black) out of jail/prison. Back in the day, it didn't take much for a person of 'influence' to have someone they didn't like put away.

I am cheap. I eat watermelon and fried chicken. I am neither Jewish nor black.

And I can pull you up at least a thousand cases where some dirt bag defense attorney has secured the release of a dangerous criminal.

I don't disagree; however, it can also be spread around to anyone in the legal profession including some judges. Plea deals accepted by both parties, to me, just shows a total disregard for the law. I'm aware of two persons currently in CC jail serving 1 1/2 and 1 year sentences for sexual child abuse. Both had plea deals otherwise both would have been serving many years because of all the charges that were dropped. It's like they get to pick and select a lesser charge to plead guilty to. IMO if they are charged with 10 counts initially they should be tried for all 10 and let a jury of their peers determine if they are guilty of all 10 or not.
