ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today celebrated major milestones in science and technology projects for Southern Maryland, including additional state funding for the College of Southern Maryland’s (CSM) Velocity Center, set to open in Indian Head in 2020. At a second stop in La Plata, he attended the dedication ceremony for the Bill and Julie Dotson Imaging Center at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, which is expanding breast cancer services in the region.
Located within one of Maryland’s 149 Opportunity Zones, the Velocity Center will serve as an innovation and start-up facility, with dedicated space for Navy Research. The State of Maryland has committed more than $1.5 million to the development of the Velocity Center, including today’s $350,000 award from the Rural Maryland Council. The Velocity Center will support innovation and collaboration between the United States Navy, CSM, and the surrounding community. It will be home to research, training exercises, classes, competitions, and other opportunities for entrepreneurship and experimentation.
“Our administration is proud to have committed historically high funding to grow and revitalize Maryland’s rural communities, and today we are seeing the benefits of that record investment,” said Governor Hogan. “This incredible project is a shining example of what is possible when government, our colleges and universities, and the local community work together, and another reason why Maryland is consistently ranked as one of the most innovative states in America.”
Later, Governor Hogan was joined by Lieutenant Governor Boyd K. Rutherford for the ribbon cutting and dedication of the Bill and Julie Dotson Imaging Center at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center. The new imaging center will help uninsured and underinsured individuals gain access to diagnosis, screening, and treatment services.
“Every cancer diagnosis is a heartbreaking story, but as I can tell you first-hand, early detection truly can make all the difference and can save lives,” said Governor Hogan. “That is why innovative, cutting-edge imaging centers like this are so crucial. This is very personal to me, and I can tell you that there is no better place in the world to receive high-quality medical care than right here in the State of Maryland.”
The governor commemorated the event by presenting an official Governor’s Citation to donors Julie and Bill Dotson.
