Attorney General Independent Investigations Division Investigating Baltimore County Officer-Involved Shooting

BALTIMORE, MD (February 2, 2023) – The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General is investigating a police-involved shooting involving an officer from the Baltimore County Police Department that occurred on Tuesday morning.

On January 31, at approximately 6:10 a.m., detectives with the Baltimore County Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Support Team were in the 10700 Block of Pulaski Highway in White Marsh conducting surveillance on a SUV occupied by two people. Detectives were aware that the driver had multiple outstanding warrants. Detectives attempted to perform a vehicle block to pin the SUV in order to apprehend the driver. Detectives then exited their vehicles and approached the SUV when the driver maneuvered out of the block, striking an unmarked police vehicle. Detective J. Trenary discharged his firearm, striking the driver. The SUV continued traveling through a parking lot and struck an unrelated civilian vehicle before crashing. The SUV driver, an adult male, was struck in the upper body and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition. No other individuals were injured.

Detective Trenary is a 16-year veteran of the Baltimore County Police Department. The name of the injured man will not be released at this time.

Detectives assigned to the Baltimore County Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Support Team are not equipped with body-worn cameras, and the involved police vehicles are not equipped with dashboard cameras.

UPDATE – Man Dies following January 31 Officer-Involved Shooting in Baltimore County

BALTIMORE, MD (March 4, 2023) –
The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General today was notified of the death of the man shot by Baltimore County Police on January 31 in 10700 Block of Pulaski Highway in White Marsh. The name of the decedent will be released at a later time. In accordance with the IID’s authority to investigate incidents of civilians suffering injuries likely to result in death, the IID began investigating this shooting on January 31. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Decedent Identified in January’s Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Baltimore County

BALTIMORE, MD (March 6, 2023)
– The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has identified the decedent in the fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on January 31 in the 10700 Block of Pulaski Highway in White Marsh.

The decedent has been identified as 37-year-old Brian McCourry Jr., of Essex, Maryland. Mr. McCourry passed away on March 3.
