BALTIMORE, MD (October 9, 2022) – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Office of the Attorney General is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Baltimore City Saturday evening.
On October 8, at approximately 6:20 p.m., officers with the Baltimore Police Northwest District Action Team were on patrol in a marked police cruiser in Northwest Baltimore when they observed a black Honda CR-V driving in the area. Officers began following the CR-V. The CR-V drove to the area of Grantley Road and Liberty Heights Avenue where it entered the intersection and collided with two vehicles. One of those vehicles struck a fourth vehicle. The officers following the CR-V reported the crash to dispatch. The driver of the Honda CR-V was taken to an area hospital where they were pronounced dead. The occupants in two of the vehicles were also taken to an area hospital to be treated for their injuries. The occupants in the fourth vehicle declined medical treatment.
The IID is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
The IID will generally release the name of the decedent and involved officers within 48 hours of the incident, though that period may be extended if there is a specific reason to believe that an officer’s safety is at risk.
The Baltimore Police cruiser was not equipped with a dashboard camera. The involved officers were wearing body-worn cameras. The Independent Investigations Division will generally release body camera footage within 14 days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 14 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
The Maryland General Assembly, in Senate Bill 600, passed a law mandating that the Office of Attorney General investigate all police-involved fatalities in the State of Maryland beginning October 1, 2021. These investigations are conducted by the office’s Independent Investigations Division, in conjunction with the Maryland State Police. The OAG and BPD have reached an agreement to allow for the Attorney General’s investigation while still allowing BPD to meet the investigatory obligations of its federal consent decree.
