Infected with Anti-Virus 2009 hijacker worm

Any suggestions on what to do now? Every time internet explorer is opened, before the page finishes loading, it is interrupted. A screen pops up stating my computer has been infected and then provides me a link on how to purchase an anti virus program. I have read about this on the internet and understand this is a scam.
At this point, I do not know what to do, or how to remove this worm. I have tried AVG8 virus scan, but it does not help. Has anyone had any success with problems like this without taking the computer to a business?

We just had this same problem yesterday. I'm not very computer literate but my husband downloaded a virus fixer called malware. We have another computer so he downloaded it onto a cd on the uninfected one and then uploaded it on the infected one. It caught at least 30 things. Good luck with your problem.

Thank you. I will get the program here at work , then bring it home to the infected computer and give it a try.

Malwarebytes will get it done. I posted instructions in another topic on the first page. Look for it.
