Innocent after 20 years on death row

Great idea to help a cause right here on this board! Please read on!

Think for a minute about everything that you did from 1977-1997. Now,
erase it all. That’s 20 years gone – BOOM – just like that. I’m only
21, so that would be a LIFETIME.

I saw a play that really moved me called “The Exonerated”. In short,
the play tells the TRUE stories of people who spent years on death row
before being found innocent and set free.

The play ran for years, but unfortunately, isn’t running anymore. But I
just saw Court TV is doing a film-version of the same play with some
bigtime actors/actresses i.e. Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon, etc.. It
airs on Jan.27th @ 9PM, but I’d check their site to be sure if it’s the
same in your time zone or whatever. www.courttv.com

I’m hoping that I could collect more people’s opinions here so I can
print and mail them to my Congressman and even my Governor. Letters
from actually people are powerful! Here’s a link to another
documentary, which gave me the idea of how to get involved!
http://deadlinethemovie.com/get_involved/take_action.php

So if you have thoughts on the death penalty, please share them here.
Just imagine if it was you, or your friend, or family sitting innocent
on death row. FYI One of my favorite songs has the line, “If you’re not
going to make something better, than you’re just IN THE WAY!” Let’s
all make something better right now.

Thanks so much!

So is this thread supposed to be about your thoughts on the death sentence?

Or about how the innocent are sent to jail?

Not So Much On Topic But...

Aye..saw your post an wanted to add a few words..Not so much on topic of innocent on death row but..
For one, alot of people I know are in jail for drugs.99.9% of them sold them.In no way is this post saying it's right, but these are just my opinions.I just think it's outrageous how alot of drug dealers are put in jail longer than alot of murderers, rapists, etc.Especially around St.mary's county.Example,A few months ago a woman was killed by her boyfriend after an argument at the club happyland, but PRIOR to all of that, the woman did everything she could to avoid having this man contact her,ran state to state, orders of protection, the whole 9,this situation could've easily been prevented if the law enforced stronger upon individuals of this sort, but they are too focused on other non legitimate things to get involved with protecting the REAL people in danger. Not saying I know the whole story about this certain incident,But It is so ridiculous that the law,not just in MD but throughout the whole country, non violent,1st time offenders get 5-10 years, sometimes longer, for ridiculous drug charges.Like i said,in no way am i saying it's right, but sometimes there are much more important things going on.As my mother would say it's like ignoring a hippo in the refrigerator, yet smashing the fly on the wall (hah).I've been reading up on alot of the police briefs in the local news on this site,an it always has 5,6 or 7 names of people that have been taken into custody for drug charges, not but 2 weeks ago my best friends boyfriend was incarcerated for 6 months for being ASSOCIATED with a drug dealer. My friend that lives right down the street from me,he got an indictment for 4 counts of drug associated charges.I mean it's absolutely ridiculous how this county works. It's so backwards.I mean OJ went free, but Tyrone from down tha street got 10 years. What's goin on???? Funny how they put SO much energy into irrelevent cases, when 95% of these people are NOT violent, cause no harm but makin their money an keep to themselves. An i know i might get a soccer mom or 2 saying 'How dare you? These men are selling drugs to my child!' But trust me,studies show that tha main reason children start doing drugs or drinking alcohol is from lack of attention from parents, arguments with parents, bullying at school, etc. So no need for harsh words towards me,i know what I'm talking about. But I just wanted to add a few words to this post.

Just me
Interesting - 2 first time posters who just happen to be hawking a TV show. I read something yesterday - wish I'd saved a link - where a company (companies) are making posts like these in message boards as advertisements. I found similar "posts" on another board I frequent about another TV show.

Looks like spamming threads are now invading our lives...

We don't really have capital punishment here in the United States. What we have is a cruel joke on society. I've been to countries like Singapore and Saudi Arabia who vigorously enforce their death penalties, and I can tell you it works!!! You can go anywhere, at anytime, and have no fear of criminals - mainly because anyone who has shown criminal leanings is dead. And immigrants quickly learn that you live longer by making your money the old fashioned way - you work for it. Singapore has a mandatory death sentence for any controlled substance dealing or transporting offense, so the folks who are only sitting in jail over here are getting off easy. Nedless to say... there aren't may drug-related problems in Singapore.

I am all for mandatory DNA testing (when applicable) for people convicted of any crime in the past who can be proven innocent. That's just common sense, and now that the tests are quicker and cheaper, there's no reason not to do it. But, I'm also for testing the DNA of people who have been acquitted of crimes who can be proven guilty by the tests. If these tests are accurate enough to overturn a conviction, why aren't they accurate enough to overturn an acquittal? Double jeopardy was established to prevent the government from repeatedly using the same bad evidence to convict someone until they found the right jury. With these tests, there's no question of guilt or innocence, so it's a done deal. So, there should be no reason to have innocent people locked up and guilty people out on the streets.

I was seriously planning to watch this, until I saw Susan Sarandon was in it. Sorry, no thanks.

I thought Double Jeopardy meant if you were found innocent once, no more trials, you're good to go.
O.J. could come out now and say "I did it, left the gloves behind cause they didn't fit, of course....." and there would be nothing they could do about it.

You're right Daddy O. The government currently gets one chance to convict. This was instituted because in old England the government could put you through trial after trial until they could find someone to say you're guilty. Needless to say... there were a lot of wrongful prosecutions and convictions. But since DNA testing is so reliable and accurate, it wouldn't be like the government would be using bogus evidence to convict you. You wouldn't even need to be a trial. Just have the "innocent" person come back for a DNA test. If they match the crime scence sample, they go right into cuffs and on to sentencing.

But I get the feeling that many who feel that DNA testing is more than accurate enough to free someone, will feel that there are all sorts of deficiencies with using DNA testing to convict someone who's been acquitted. Once more... the rights of the guilty outweigh the public interest.

There's always perjury, tampering with evidence, assault with a deadly weapon, and a number of other charges. You'll notice that in the sniper trials, they only tried them with one death penalty offense each. So if there are holes poked in it on appeal, there will be dozens of other chances to get them.
