I did PMs and repairs to the CRT-3s during my first tour in Keflavik. We had C-117s, C-118s, and the AF had some EC-121s we supported that had Gibson Girls in their life rafts. Somewhere in my stuff I have still have a box kite from the kit. We joked that they really didn't work but they would give you something to do while waiting to die.
We had them on the life rafts on our C118's, did both morse and hand cranked emergency. None of us A/C knew morse that I know of, was required maybe the tweet radio operator or navaguesser. They also came with a salt water activated hydrogen balloon that carried the balloon up. I took one that was decades out of date, threw it in Stony Creek, blew up maybe a foot in diameter and petered out. Rubber was dry rot.
The emergency beacon we had on C9's 123.5VHF and 243UHF (I think) along with a jettonsible one on the vert stabilizer (which I accidentally launched once). How was I supposed to know there was a hot lug behind the loose rivet I was drilling out? LOLOL
Called tower said to ignore distress call! That was by far my most expensive phuck up. No idea what it cost but I did hear about it......... shiit happens.
They were still in the black with me, broken ez out in T56 gearbox that I level said impossible to get out. I took a crack at it with a die grinder being the 120 sup, nothing to lose..... looked like a hero that day. $500k saved.
All counts on 20 as they said.
