Internet Explorer not working

For some unknown reason, our IE is not working. We logged off after having no issues with it and the next time we tried to log on, it wasn't working. Nothing pops up in the field where the website address should be specifically our home page, yahoo.com. We don't even get the little swirly thing like it's logging onto a site. Any ideas how we can get it working again?

What version of IE, what version of Windows?

Windows 7 Home Edition

Are you up to date on patches?

There is a nasty exploit going around affecting IE 9. I think an emergency patch was released a week or two ago, and the wrap-up patch was pushed yesterday on Patch Tuesday.

When was the last time you tried it? I don't think it's very likely, but I suppose there is an outside chance you were trying to use it while updates were actually being applied and it appeared broken because not everything was copied in place yet.

Also if you don't have automatic updates turned on, go into Windows Control Panel -> Updates (something like that) and make sure you are up to date. Checking for updates will also verify that you are able to reach the internet, which should put you at ease a bit as that suggests it's not something systemic with your system.

Also, (assuming you can get the browser going) I'd look into getting the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool which will give you the ability to check for malware and the like.

It worked fine Monday afternoon. Tried to log on Monday evening and it wouldn't work. I will check on the updates thing. We have Norton Anti-virus so I don't think it's a virus. We had this happen with Windows XP and within a day or two, the problem corrected itself. Too bad when it upgraded to Win 7, we didn't revert back to XP.

RareBreed, you can try this to see if it changes anything.

To reset Internet Explorer settings
1.Close all Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.

2.Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button . In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

3.Click the Tools button , and then click Internet options.
4.Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

Select the Delete personal settings check box if you would also like to remove browsing history, search providers, Accelerators, home pages, Tracking Protection, and ActiveX Filtering data.

5.In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.

6.When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, click Close, and then click OK.

7.Close Internet Explorer.

Your changes will take effect the next time you open Internet Explorer.

Thanks. I will try that. I tried a system reset and my husband downloaded IE 11 at work and we tried to load the CD but neither worked. Norton actually said there was a virus on the CD my husband made so  .
