Internet issues - turns on and off

Hey all.

I'm sick and tired of trying to figure this out by myself, so I'm turning to people who are way more tech-saavy than me.

Ever since I moved down to somd, I have had internet issues....the internet would consistently cut in and out. I chalked it up to metrocast and basic internet, and didn't really care. My xbox 360 never had any trouble, and I didn't really care too much about the internet anyway. Well, I finally got sick of it and upgraded to better metrocast. Unfortunately, the issue still exists.

Issue - It seems internet kicks on and off. When it's on, it works fine. However, it drops me about every 5 or 10 minutes. Pages will take forever/won't load, youtube videos will stop loading, etc. After about a minute or two, internet starts working fine again.

So far, I have tried upgrading the internet and replacing the modem. I'm still dropped when I hook directly up to the wireless router with an ethernet cable. Also, directly hooked up the modem will drop me, but not NEARLY as bad. But, it still happens. I'm currently running Windows 7 on my laptop. My roommate says he does not have the same issues on his laptop, but I haven't used it to confirm/deny (he doesn't use much internet).

I believe it is a laptop hardware issue, but I'm not for sure. The other thing I think it might be is a netgear/router issue. Any ideas? Where do I go from here? I'm getting tired of this....you figure it out, I'll buy you a beer.

If your cable is split a bunch of times inside your house, the signal degrades. I had that problem and I put a quality splitter on the cable where it entered my house and ran a dedicated line directly to my cable modem/router. The internet 'drops' stopped and haven't had that problem in years now.

I was having the same issue. Called Metrocast and they ran a test on the line and said the line level was dropping. Sent a guy out and he found a bad connector in their feed box outside. He said they had received a batch that was causing problems. He replaced it and I haven't lost connection since.
