(UNIONVILLE, MD) – Maryland state troopers are continuing their investigation into a Frederick County crash this afternoon that resulted in the death of one driver, injuries to another driver and passenger, and the subsequent death of a county firefighter who was assisting at the scene.
The deceased driver involved in the crash is identified as Kevin N. Tevelow, 22, of New Windsor, Md. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The injured driver is identified as Ricky H. Hyde, 60, of Manchester, Md. His injured passenger is identified as George N. Riggle III, 58, of Millers, Md. Both were transported by ambulance to the Carroll Hospital Center for treatment.
Shortly before 1:00 p.m. today, Maryland State Police troopers from the Frederick Barrack were dispatched to the report of a crash on Rt. 26 west of Unionville Road, in Unionville, Md. Arriving troopers found a passenger car and a tractor trailer had been involved in a head-on collision. Frederick County fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and were involved in extricating the drivers of both vehicles.
The preliminary investigation indicates the 2016 Volkswagen, driven by Tevelow, was westbound on Rt. 26 near Unionville Road when it attempted to pass a westbound vehicle in an authorized passing zone. The investigation indicates that while passing, the Volkswagen driver failed to yield the right of way to the eastbound 2016 International tractor and tanker trailer hauling water, driven by Hyde. The tractor trailer driver apparently swerved to the eastbound shoulder in attempt to avoid a collision, but both vehicles crashed head-on.
MDOT State Highway Administration CHART personnel responded to the scene to set up detours around the scene. Rt. 26 was closed for more than five hours due to the extensive scene and investigation. Lanes were reopened just before 6:30 p.m.
The Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services and the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Company announced late this afternoon the line of duty death of Volunteer Firefighter Michael Powers. According to their statement, Firefighter Powers experienced a medical emergency while on the scene of this crash. He was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The men and women of the Maryland State Police extend their deepest sympathies to the members of the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Company and the Frederick County fire and EMS community and join them in honoring the service and sacrifice of Firefighter Powers.
