ipad 1 or ipad 2?

I want to buy my DH an IPAD for his birthday, but I am not sure if I should buy 1 or 2. He would use it to read his blogs and newspapers for the most part. IPAD I is attractively priced. I would appreciate any pertinent advice. Thanks

Methodically disorganized
The 2 is smaller (in weight and thickness), but it's not like the 1 is a burden to hold or carry. The 2 is also faster, but that would be irrelevant for reading.

I'd say buy a 1, then if you want to lay out more money, get an iTunes gift card for some apps and stuff.

Thanks. I plan to go shopping after work today.

I'd shell out the extra $100 for one of the iPad 2 models. I have an original iPad, and I'd been considering getting a second. After seeing the improvements made with the new version, I'm not only pretty sure I will do so, but I'm considering getting 2 of the newest version and letting my nephew have my original model.

I think the cameras alone make the iPad 2 worth the price difference: they open up so much potential functionality. FaceTime (video chatting) on the iPhone is super easy, I suspect that ability on the larger iPad screen will be super cool. Then you have the thinner, lighter design and the faster processor. Before Apple incorporated multi-tasking into iOS, speed wasn't even an issue. I never noticed any hesitation whatsoever - everything seemed to happen instantly. But, now I notice short delays sometimes (though perhaps only because I had been spoiled), so the dual core chip might make a perceivable difference.

Another thing to consider: If you are going to buy mobile data service (so that you have internet functionality most everywhere, rather than just when you are within range of a usable Wi-Fi network), and you want to use Verizon rather than AT&T, you'll probably want to buy an iPad 2. The original version only works with AT&T service, but the new version is offered in AT&T models and Verizon models (you have to get the one that works with the provider you are going to use, they aren't interchangeable). You could use the original iPad with Verizon service, but you'd have to have a separate device to act as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

*I* thought they were priced the same?

I'd go with the 2 personally.

The iPad 2 models have the same pricing as the original iPad models did, but the pricing of the original models has been dropped by $100 with the release of the new version.

I Pad IX comes out in August.

Yeah, I know. Rumors have pointed to a pre-Christmas release of an iPad 3, so part of me is arguing to wait and make more efficient use of my upgrade dollars. But, I think the cameras represent a significant increase in functionality. My gut tells me that whatever enhancements an (2011) iPad 3 would offer wouldn't represent as significant a leap forward in functionality. It's hard to know with Apple though... the more expectations increase (trying finally to outrun delivery), the more delivery beats them.

I figured, if he is going to use it mostly for reading, he wouldn't need the fastest processor or a camera.

I guess you never know; he could get hooked on gaming and surfing.

I appreciate the very thoughtful perspectives shared on the forum today. I bought IPAD 1 this afternoon.I think it will suit his needs just fine.

Buy used Ipad 1.
I was an early purchaser. Its great and you can buy a used one (less than 10 months old) for about a $100.00. The Ipad 2 does not do much more than take pictures.

Thanks. I plan to go shopping after work today.

Get a refurb Gen 1 from the Apple store (online) for $350 (plus tax) with free shipping. Mine arrived the next day. Works great, same warranty. I just got the wifi version.

That was very nice of you - a great gift. I hope he enjoys it and finds it very useful.

Can you print, with either? My wife wants one because she wants one, but needs something to rationalize the expense. If she can take it in to her office, use it for a little work (realtor), and print wirelessly, she can self-justify one replacing her laptop.
