Before anyone says anything, yes I'm aware iPhones suck and I hate iPhones or I anything as a matter of fact. But, I wanted to give it a try I like to try new things. So with that out of the way.

I woke up this morning phone had been charging all night. I look at it and all 715 pictures are gone and all my contacts gone.

Can anyone explain this?

No, other than the battery being retarded, I love iPhone... sorry for you though, I'd be SO  if I lost my pictures !!!!

There is no good time to say this, so now is as good a time as any.

Backup, backup, backup.

Whether it's to a cloud device or a local drive/CD/DVD, if it's important enough to cry over when you lose it, it's important enough to take the time to make sure it can be recovered.

As far as why everything disappeared, no idea.

If the pics are on an SD card in the phone, they could get corrupted as well as the phone's internal memory. I periodically connect my smartphone to my laptop, transfer my photos, docs, contacts, etc.... and once a month or so backup the entire contents of my laptop.

If you're sure you didn't change any settings (e.g. you didn't log out of one iCloud account and into another, or turn off iCloud backup for some things), then I'd try a hard reset. There's a good chance that will fix this issue. Hold the home and sleep buttons at the same time, I don't remember for how long but you'll see something happening on the screen that means it's shutting down. After it shuts down, restart it.

Speaking only from Android.... I no gots iPhone.

There are utilities you can download which will perform backups for you. There is also built-in to newer versions of Android a backup to Google Cloud, if you have a Google account (which is almost mandatory if you have an Android...)

I choose to manually backup my stuff. Connect the Android to the laptop. A new phone device will appear in My Computer. From there you can browse the Android directories. I changed the default picture storage on mine from internal to the external SD card, so I browse to the SD card and drag them to a folder on the laptop.

You could also, if the pics are on teh removable SD card, shutdown the phone, remove the card, insert it into your laptop and recover the files.

Well I'm on the way to get my HTC One. Best buy has the blue 32 gig model for a dollar. Upgrade date wasnt until June but Sprint waved it effective as of today because of all the issues I have been having as far as signal and Web connectivity.
