iphone or ipod touch

i already have a verizon cell phone that works just fine but i need something that I can use for skype while travelling overseas. i have decided to go with either a new model of ipod touch or an iphone. the cost is about the same except i'd have to add the 30$ a month data plan to my verizon bill. having a smart phone is definitely appealing but I can't make up my mind.

what would you do? ipod touch + basic cell phone or iphone?

I have to think it would be easier to carry the one device instead of two. To Skype with the iPod, you would need a WiFi hotspot, which would in turn require being in a certain location or tethering it with your phone, if you can.

Keep in mind if you go for the iPhone that when oversea you will be roaming and incurring big huge fees. Verizon is not worldwide. If you do get one put it in airplane mode and only enable the wifi. If that seems too much just get the touch.

Are you able to upgrade? My husband travels extensively [mainly France] and he upgraded to the Droid 2 Global. We are with Verizon Wireless and the cell works great overseas! We use Skype everyday. Just a phone call before he leaves and the phone is activated for use overseas.

My phone bill is about $30 more per month because I have international calling on my line. I pay the .20/minute and $2.99/month int. calling plan.

He also has a French cell phone and I also call that, free incoming on his end, and again, same rates for me as above.

HVP is right, if you just enable WiFi you shouldn't have any additional charges. My husband often uses his phone instead of his laptop and/or tablet.
