iPOD LCD EXploded

Went to use the iPOD yesterday and noticed that the LCD was broken. Closer examinations shows that it exploded outwards, as you can see from the pics. This thing has been sitting on the shelf for weeks, so I know I didn't do anything to it.

Googling shows a zillion threads about iPOD LCDs going back to 2004. But, I couldn't find anything specific about this. I have little hope that Apple will fix it even if it is defective. Anyone hear anything about this problem?

They've had a run of battery issues. Might check that angle.

Unless I have some automatic extended warranty from the credit card I used to buy it, have few hopes of getting the "defective" device fixed for free.

Even if you have a warranty, you won't get it fixed for free. Apple has a lockdown on that crap. Minimum service repair fee of like $150, and according to their fine print, may cost more upon beginning repairs. It's less expensive to buy a new one.

18 yr old had a MP3 player do the same thing(on 3 different ones)....best buy said that it was a battery issue

They exchanged the first 2...but, when the mutt went down with the third one the same way(within a month), the manager said it wasn't their issue and said that the boy dropped it....we ended up sending it back to the manufacturer and got another one from them with no explaination as to what was wrong with it

After this batch of my ipods bite the bullet, I'm going to get an mp3 player that isn't tied to Apple.

Yeah, we've bought them for the kids over the years and they're true POS. The batteries suck big time and the software is always goofing up. Friends who've had them had the same problems.

It might be out of warranty, but take it to a Mac Store and talk to a manager. They might have a solution. I did a couple of searches on Apple's site and Google, the only battery recall so far was on a notebook, although there are widespread occurrences of iPods smoking.

Girl has had to dump hers about 3 times and reload because it freezes up....she only uses it occasionally now

Thank goodness I have a great iPod. It's almost 3 years old and works GREAT! I dropped it in water by accident shortly after I got it. It took a few hours to dry out, but kept on going. Hubby has one and both girls have them. No problems at all. :yay:

That is the battery; the iPod's battery is at the top.

My boy has a Zune - he loves it. The only downside is that it does not have all the accessories the iPod has readily in stores, you have to order stuff for it online.

ifixit.com has some replacement pieces for great prices, for all the generations and models. They give you detailed instructions on how to install any of the pieces they sell.

I'm getting a black faceplate replacement from there as soon as they come back in stock, only $10 (before S&H of course).
