To my knowledge, you can't get music off your iPod.

:howdy: You seem knowledgeable so I have a question. How do you get music from one iPod to another? Is that allowed if you have two? Thanks. :flowers:

Setup the ipod on the old computer to pick up as a logical drive. Then, you will be able to copy your files before moving it to a new one. Or, don't use iTunes. Do a Google Search for an iTunes alternative.

To my knowledge, ITunes7 won't delete the music off of there - but I myself wouldn't run the risk without being absolutely sure. I've got an iPod laying around but I've never used it.

I know Olympus' m:robe used the same kind of software platform that deleted music like iTunes, but I loaded a script ONTO the device that sync'd through MP11.

I have an Olympus MP3 player and a DELL Axim handheld... Since the DELL runs the Windows Mobile platform and uses external storage for the music, I rely more on that.

Disregard what I said about ITUNES7 - it will erase your music. If you can - set it up to pick up as a logical drive and do a search for *.mp3, *.mp4, *.ac3 (or whatever the #### it uses), and copy those files to your My Docs folder.

You cannot set this up through the ipod (or at least w/ IPOD Nano). You have to do this from your old computer.

Andy got it right, but I didn't use an old computer, I used my new one with Vista that I bought yesterday. Just went in and copied all the music files and re-synced it. It's funny how when you hover over the Music file on iPod it says empty, but it had almost 10 gigs of music on it!

I use a gadget called "Hitch" to transfer music (or photos, videos, etc) off an iPod, or between two iPods. It works without a computer...it's about the size of a regular iPod...and it also charges the iPod. It will transfer between any two USB devices, so it also works to back up an iPod to a thumbdrive or standalone hard drive, or to transfer from a camera/camcorder to an iPod, etc.....Best Buy sells it for about $99, and it's under $70 at other places online....They have a demo at www.gethitch.com Good luck!

You could have just backed up the music folder on your old computer and then copied it to the new one. You have to authorize the computer to play any protected AAC files by logging into itunes store, but otherwise it works fine as long as you haven't authorized too many computers. I used this method when I bought a new computer a few months ago.

Another way is to copy the music from your ipod to your hard drive using windows exporer or mycomputer and then installing itunes and having it search for music (with your ipod unplugged). I used this method to copy files from my ipod to my computer that I had placed on my ipod with my parents computer. This can be a pain if your just trying to pull a few songs off your ipod though, as it uses a really wacky file structure.

Just make sure you turn of automatic management in itunes untill you get the itunes library to match whats on you ipod.

Can someone tell me, in layman's terms, how to do this? :flowers:

basically, plug it in, set itunes not to start automatically with connecting it. Then open it through my computer like you would a flash drive. then you can view files, put stuff on, and take stuff off. the music on the ipod are in "hidden" files, so you just have to go to folder options and select show hidden folders.

more or less that should get you what you need :)

Perfect, thank you. My hard drive crashed yesterday, so iTunes was completely wiped out. :jameo: Luckily I only lost one purchased song that I hadn't sent to my iPod yet.

you can get that song back when you replace your HD and reinstall iTunes, just authorize that PC and get your music back

If this is true then why do they tell you "your music is valuable and you are responsible for backing it up" in program alerts all the time...:eyebrow:

I bought an external hard drive for the sole purpose of backing up my itunes because I found myself losing sleep at the thought of losing them all...:jameo:

I just downloaded Tab Boniet's "Best of the Bayou Blues" a couple days ago and haven't back it up yet...:frown:
