Is it inhumane

for a dog to live outside in a pen? A large one with shelter/shade, etc.?

I know alot of people in this county have thier dogs living outside year round and I'm just wondering what the opinion of that is.

This is just my opinion but I personally don't see the point of having a dog if your just going to leave it tied up outside. You could say our dog is spoiled though.

I have never kept a dog outside full time. Mine always had a doggie door and could come and go as they please.

Ther're animals. They've lived outside since there have been dogs.
Growing up, we didn't have AC in the house and nobody came and rescued me :bawl:

What type of dog? What accommodations do you have for protection from the elements? How big of a pen? Will the dog get time to interact with the family? Will the dog be chained in the the pen?

also, how close are your neighbors? if you live in a small community and a loud dog, keeping the animal outside all the time might be inhumane to the neighbors :lmao:

our neighborhood has several dogs that are outside full time and they constantly wake me me up howling along with and following the sirens along 235.

:yeahthat: As long as it has food & water.... Cows, horses, squirrels, opposums, raccoons, birds, etc... all live outside year round. Dogs are no different.

Yes they are. Certain dogs cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold. Take my Boxers for example. They are brachycephalic. Dogs of this type have been bred to have "pushed in" faces and this compromises their respiratory system.

Over the years dogs have been bred for a certain look or certain task and they are not just your run of the mill ancient dog any longer. They all have certain and very specific needs.

A labrador. It would be about 10 feet by 15 feet, no chaining it up. He would have a dog house and a roof covering half of the pen. With the beagles, we use canvas to make roll down type curtains for protection in the winter (as well as straw in the doghouses). But the sides pretty much stay up in summer. He would be brought out daily to run around and play (we have a farm) and would have interaction with the family. He would be out just about any time I'm outside, which is alot.

I have a 50 foot run line for my lab...pulley & cable and two enormous trees for shade. Off the line she has a 20 foot chain--she ignores her dog house ,,,sits at the base of the oak.

The number one problem with her out there is deerflies.--I bring her in when I find they are harrassing her. I also let her sleep inside at night...so she doesn't do any night time "spook barking."

I feel sorry for dogs in small cages....they do need to wander a bit.

Labs are people dogs, and i think its a waste to put a dog with such personality in a pen.
Hound dogs on the other hand do fine with being penned up.

But to each his own, if thats what you want to do....

I'll vouch for that. Plus it makes them neurotic. My roommate had a lab who was a fine dog, but she was kept in a pen outside. So when she'd let the dog out of the pen, she'd go absolutely nuts and tear around the house or take off and prowl the neighborhood.

Some dogs do well in pens but Labs, I don't think, are one of them because they're too sociable. Not like I'm some dog person, but this is just my experience.

I guess I am a very lucky dog because my human would NEVER pen me up outside.

The only time I really have a problem with animals outdoors is when you see them tied out on a lead that about two-feet long and the've worn a spot in the grass from being tied out in that condition for so long.... I mean what;s the sense in having the animal in the first place if your going to keep it in those kind of conditions. Whether or not it against the law, not sure; inhumane, up for opinion.

I had to stop at a house (I had no idea who lived there) and ask them about their dog... It was in Charles County in a pretty nice neighborhood, I saw a Dalmatian tied to the bottom handle of the garage door with a lease. No one was around when I passed the first time, or when I drove back to take a closer look. I stopped and knocked on the door to ask if they knew who their dog had been tied out. Come to find out their daughter was supposed to walking the dog and tied her up to go play with her friends. Just image the dog on the least if someone hit the garage door opener.... :dead:
