Is it okay?

Is it okay to keep a dog penned up all day, everyday? About 9 years ago when I lived with my dad, we had 2 dalmatians. The older one started to pee everywhere, he couldn't hold his bladder, so he decided to put both of them in a pen. I didn't think it would be all day everyday but it was. I tried to help the dogs out and tell him they'd be freezing in the winter and hot in the summer, and asked if he'd like to live outside? Well, he said that they had dog houses and plenty of hay so they'd keep warm and he puts a tarp over the pen to keep out shade and rain. But still I don't think that's any kind of life for an animal but I know it could also be a lot worse. So, now the 2 dalmatians have passed on, I think partially because of the cold weather. It pains me to think that they died alone in the cold dog house. ALSO, 2 years ago he bought an expensive shih tzu which he adores and keeps inside and has professional pictures of him on the wall. So, the dalmatians stay outside, shih tzu's inside. So, now he's getting another shih tzu(inside) and is looking for another dalmatian(outside) so the one that is out there now isn't lonely. He has asked my help to find a dalmatian for him. I tell him that I'll keep my eyes open but my heart is telling me, DON'T do it!! It's just one more dog that has to suffer living outside in a pen with no play and no walks and no carpet to lay on, nothing. So I've decided not to help, I'm just hoping that HE doesn't find another dog. Then, I think of lonely ol' Jojo outside by himself. So, my question is, do you think that living in a pen 24/7/365 with a doghouse is sufficient?

I say if you have to keep the dog caged up everyday, you shouldn't have it. I don't feel its fair to the dog...

We had hunting dogs growing up that stayed outside in their large pen 24/7. They had awesome shelter's and plenty of room to run around. They never had a problem.

 No furrball, I don't think it's such a great idea to keep them outdoors all year long. How'd you like it if it was done to you?

Ever hear of serious, adequate training?

Most dogs - some cats - take well to it. Give it a shot before you comdemn them to the harsh outside environment. JMHO

:yeahthat: What you aren't thinking about is the fact that they are animals, and in the wild, animals don't have houses with heating and air conditioning. I'm not saying that it is ok to keep them outside all the time.

I don't like dog owners that keep their dog in a cage that they barely have enough room to turn around in, all day when they are at work.

But we aren't talking about "wild" animals we are talking about "pets", someone wants a dog or a cat so bad but then they cage it up all the time, I'm sorry I just don't get it?

The first week I had my dog I kept him in a cage in my house. I left him out of the cage on the weekends if I was gone for an hour or 2 to see how he would do. He didn't mess anything up so I leave him out of the cage now. That way he can sleep on the couch and get his water. I felt guilty as hell the first week when I went to work. Now I don't feel so bad. If I'm going to be late getting home, I call my mom or sister to stop by and let him out.

I don't think I could keep a dog in a pen outside in any kind of weather. But that's just me.

He's an old man who is set in his way and there is no way the dog is coming inside. I told him he should give it away to someone who has other dogs he could play with and he wasn't having any of that. I just wish he would at least play with him and give him attention. I was thinking about finding someone where he lives to come over and walk him like twice a week but I don't think I could afford it so I'm gonna talk to him about it when I go and visit. But I don't think he needs another dog because the cycle will just continue.
