in the history of consumer products?

I bought a new laptop about 3 yrs ago and gave it away because of Vista; ordered a new screen for my old Dell with XP and have been happy ever since. Hate Vista, MS should give you a free version Win7 if you bought Vista...

Is this question posed too late considering it's been effectively replaced for some time now? :lmao:

And no, it lags just slightly behind the Edsel, Snake Oil, and the Popeil Pocket Fisherman

Ok so I want a good reason for why Vista sucks. I've never had a problem with it. A bunch of the complaints are bogus. It had issues at first, they resolved a ton of them, but Vista was doomed because of the name. Windows 7 is an upgraded version of Vista and people hail it as the best OS ever. All they did was fix a few things from the last version of Visa and make it look different. It was pretty easy since the last version of Vista wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

But if you're talking the original Vista, then yeah...they screwed up on that one.

I have 4 Windows machines set up in my house. One of them runs Vista, the other 3 run older versions (and, of course, I've had various other ones over the years). The Vista machine always has problems, e.g. it locks up constantly, that stupid keyboard shortcut where the backspace key acts as the back function in browser windows bites me and makes me lose text that I've typed all the time. The other machines, while having typical Windows performance and ease-of-operation issues, are a pure pleasure to use as compared to the Vista machine.

Eventually, I'll feel it is justifiable to spend another $400 to replace my Vista machine - but, as struggler44 suggested, Microsoft really should offer people that bought Vista a subsidy to buy a new Windows 7 machine. Every person I've talked to has pretty much the same opinion that I do about Vista - it was an uber-lemon. I find it hard to believe that a company with so many resources could have rolled out a product like that - it's like they never even bothered to test it before they released it. On the other hand, I've heard great things about Windows 7 - and those I've talked to tell me it is nothing like Vista.

The poll is skewed. So I'm not selecting either option.

I have Vista, and I'm perfectly happy with it. People have told me their sob stories about Vista, and I'm just not getting any of that on mine.

Maybe I just got lucky, and I happened to grab the only non-buggy version of Vista on the planet.

The intentional skewing was meant as overt sarcasm.

You mean a subsidy to buy Vista plus? That's all Windows 7 is. Why do you think it came out so quickly? It was built on Vista!

FWIW, my Vista machine runs better than the XP crap I have used at work. Not saying XP is bad, but I don't see a difference in the OS. In fact, my biggest issue with Vista has been IE8 so I abandoned it.

Hey, I got one too! That means there are at least 2 versions of it. :yahoo:

My netbook came with vista, never ran right. Got a free upgrade to Win7, haven't had a single issue since, and some of the new features in Win7 make it worthwhile.

Recovery from standby is maybe 5 seconds, access to the net is ready by then, so no waiting to reconnect to the wireless, the Media Center consolidates all my movies from multiple network sources for playback over the HDMI port in full 1080p resolution.... etc.

It really does make XP look archaic.

Currently upgrading all of our corp computers to win7.

I think it came out so quickly - whether you want to call it a fixed version of Vista or a new version worthy of its own name (e.g. 7, which is what Microsoft chose to call it) - because Microsoft was taking such a PR hit on the lemon it had released and HAD to do something quickly. It still took too long and Microsoft should admit (not just tacitly as it has) that they released a defective product, issue a refund to those that bought that product, and take the short term cash flow hit (it can easily afford it).

I'm sure you can find plenty of people that haven't had problems with, or don't have an issue with, Vista. That's true of most any product. But, there are very large numbers of people who have and do. As I've indicated, every one I've brought the subject up with (or who has themselves brought the subject up) expresses much the same opinion that I do (and I'm not talking about 2 other people). The ones that have already moved on to Windows 7 rave about how much of an upgrade it is and make fun of me because I haven't done so yet myself. Maybe I'll do that today (probably not though, I suspect I'll get distracted by something else again).

The XP machines that I use (and even the one Me machine - yeah, laugh if you must) don't have anywhere near the problems that the Vista machine has, and has had since day one.

Did you ever have the pleasure of using Windows ME?

good point. From the Microsoft line, ME wins the award as worst OS. Vista gets 2nd worst, although that's only due to initial release. Vista was mostly fixed but Microsoft knew they needed to get a new OS with a new name in order to win the market back.

That's about how I see it. ME was the worst. Vista for me has worked fairly well, although I'm not crazy about a lot of the "improvements" and I hate the stuff they've done over the years to Office that I use OpenOffice almost exclusively.

My biggest schtick has been with 7. I have a laptop that frequently won't recharge, because of a software glitch that says it doesn't need to. When I uninstall the driver that causes the problem, it works fine - until Windows 7 decides to *reinstall* it anyway over my objections. The ONLY way I can keep the damned thing fully charged is to boot up in SAFE mode.

why so serious
I haven't used vista but I have been less than pleased with Windows 7. When you try to record live music with Windows 7 there is a noticeable delay, it makes it almost impossible to simply record, we had to switch over to Linux Ubuntu to get anything done.

I have Vista SP 2 and I am fairly pleased with it. The only major issue I see is memory usage and efficiency. I got this system with the most RAM I could at the time (4 GB) but was highly disappointed to learn that my 32-bit OS can only see a little more than 3 GB of it. (The Dell rep. is also partly to blame for not making sure I was aware of that.)

I do mostly Internet functions (using Firefox) and graphics (Photoshop, etc.) and the system becomes slower over time to the point that I have to restart my program(s) or even the system.

Still have to say it's way better than Win98 that I moved up from.

in the history of consumer products?

I know vista thew allot of people for a curve when it first came out.

It seemed like there was allot of incompatibility issues with external peripherals initially (lack of Vista drivers). The pop up security features was irritating as well.

Allot of Vista's issues were resolved with the service packs..but it took Windows way too long to come out with it. By then the damage was done.

Vista now (with the service packs) seems pretty good.

ME sucked. I would say a tie with (early)Vista.
