John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
39 “Abraham is our father,” they answered.
“If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.
We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
Good morning. I have some confusion over some thoughts that came to me while reading the verses this morning. Maybe that's because the story continues from the woman being thrown into the streets for adultery, and Jesus being questioned about His Birth. Those Pharisees are really confused. They think Jesus is the son of a carpenter from the town of Nazareth. Jesus knows the scripture better than they do. He has all the right answers. He keeps saying His "Father" taught Him. They think He's referring to Joseph the Carpenter.

One thought I am grappling with this morning, is the school shooting [church school shooting] that took place yesterday. A young woman went into a church school and killed three adults and three children. She was quickly identified as "transgender". That's the motive. Jesus didn't love her anymore? She's just a useless human now? Are we all that hateful? Do our children have to be murdered? Sexual preference isn't important in Heaven. It's not part of "the way" things go up there. What happened to that girl to turn her to such suicidal violence in a "church" building.

We have been reminded by John that adulterous women were stoned to death in the streets back in the days when Jesus was talking about His Heavenly Father. They would throw His mother, Mary, to be stoned if Jesus really had two dads. The exception would be if His biological father was His uncle. That's what they did, if the husband died, the wife became the property of the brother. Joseph didn't claim that he was Jesus' uncle. Jesus talked about having two dads.... Joseph, they knew and could see, and God. The Pharisees wouldn't buy that. Good for Mary.... but that made Jesus a liar in their eyes. Joseph the carpenter was His dad... period.

You know Hubby and I watch a lot of videos. Lately we've been watching the "Mandalorian" series. The "creed" is what these verses remind me of. He had to immerse himself in the waters on his planet. Then he can never take his helmet off in front of people. He's always got to follow "the way" of the Mandalorian. He has to do what's right.... while the others around him, all those monsters and bad guys... are not constrained to right and wrong.

Check out verse 43. Some of us will always be ignorant.

This is the way?

Just a comment on the first line of your post -

SO MUCH of my life, I have heard John 8:32 quoted by secular sources, about how the truth will set you free. And they quote the Bible "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". So I ask and say - who starts a sentence with "and"?

Because they ALWAYS ignore - John 8:31, which TOTALLY puts it into context - it's a syllogism of sorts.

Hold to my teachings, then truly my disciples.
Truly my disciples, know the truth.
Know the truth, you will be free.

Jesus wasn't talking about "truth" in a generic sense - he was talking about the truth HE taught.

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed,

19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
