Isaiah 60:1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
2 See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.
3 Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

and his glory appears over you.

and kings to the brightness of your dawn.
4 “Lift up your eyes and look about you:
All assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar,
and your daughters are carried on the hip.
5 Then you will look and be radiant,
your heart will throb and swell with joy;
the wealth on the seas will be brought to you,
to you the riches of the nations will come.
6 Herds of camels will cover your land,
young camels of Midian and Ephah.
And all from Sheba will come,
bearing gold and incense
and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.
7 All Kedar’s flocks will be gathered to you,
the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings on my altar,
and I will adorn my glorious temple.
All assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar,
and your daughters are carried on the hip.

8 “Who are these that fly along like clouds,
like doves to their nests?
9 Surely the islands look to me;
in the lead are the ships of Tarshish,[a]
bringing your children from afar,
with their silver and gold,
to the honor of the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel,
for he has endowed you with splendor.
like doves to their nests?

10 “Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
and their kings will serve you.
Though in anger I struck you,
in favor I will show you compassion.
11 Your gates will always stand open,
they will never be shut, day or night,
so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations—
their kings led in triumphal procession.
12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish;
it will be utterly ruined.
and their kings will serve you.

13 “The glory of Lebanon will come to you,
the juniper, the fir and the cypress together,
to adorn my sanctuary;
and I will glorify the place for my feet.
14 The children of your oppressors will come bowing before you;
all who despise you will bow down at your feet
and will call you the City of the Lord,
Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

15 “Although you have been forsaken and hated,
with no one traveling through,
I will make you the everlasting pride
and the joy of all generations.
16 You will drink the milk of nations
and be nursed at royal breasts.
Then you will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior,
your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
17 Instead of bronze I will bring you gold,
and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace your governor
and well-being your ruler.
18 No longer will violence be heard in your land,
nor ruin or destruction within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation
and your gates Praise.
19 The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.
21 Then all your people will be righteous
and they will possess the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,
the work of my hands,
for the display of my splendor.
22 The least of you will become a thousand,
the smallest a mighty nation.
I am the Lord;
in its time I will do this swiftly.”

a. Isaiah 60:9 Or the trading ships
Well, Bible-studys.org popped right up this morning.
Isaiah foresees a time when Israel will arise out of her “darkness” and “shine” with God’s glory. Then the “Gentiles shall come” to her light. Thus the “sons of strangers” described in this chapter, will come to Jerusalem to worship the Lord.
Glory of the Lord … darkness … gross darkness”: Addressing Zion, Isaiah told the city and thus the nation Israel that her light has come, putting her in contrast with the rest of the darkened world. This expressed the glory of Jerusalem during the millennial kingdom.
The verses describe in detail the worship of the nations at Jerusalem where they will “bow themselves down” at the “city of the Lord.” In that day her “officers” (governors), will be “peace” and her “exactors” (magistrates or overseers), will be “righteousness.” Her walls will be “Salvation,” her gates will be “Praise”, and the whole city will be filled with the “brightness” of the glory of the Lord.
This is from the easy English site.All the areas in this list were in the desert called Arabia. The people who lived there were called Arabs. They were busy merchants. They used camels to carry their goods over long distances.
· People in Israel usually obtained gold and frankincense by trade. And Sheba was famous for its supplies of these things. But the Queen of Sheba gave gifts of gold and frankincense to Solomon (1 Kings 10:10). And the New Testament mentions gifts of gold and frankincense in connection with the birth of Jesus the Messiah (see Matthew 2:11). Also, see Matthew 12:42.
As picture words, ‘ships, clouds, birds, nests’ describe a busy scene of action. Former enemies are now eager to bring back harmony and beauty to the city that once they tried to destroy. They do not stop to wonder why they have changed their attitude. It was the Lord who caused this to happen.
Whether people realise it or not, their deepest desires can find true satisfaction only in the God of Israel. That is true about the desires both of people, and of whole nations.
To give names to the walls and gates is a double word picture. The first means that the Lord himself will protect his people like a strong wall. The second means that the people will praise the Lord because of his actions on their behalf.
This does not mean that the sun and moon will disappear. Rather, it means that God’s people will not need their light. Their light cannot compare with the Lord’s far brighter light. And unlike the light of the sun and moon, the Lord’s light will never end (see Zechariah 14:6-7; Revelation 21:22-25).
I have to tell this story about a wall..... a wall that held everything in.....Out here in Apache Junction, AZ... there was a monsoon the other night. After months with no rain.... we got over 2 inches in less than an hour. The retention pond and all the roads in my little neighborhood became rivers. Even the coyotes had a hard time tracking down their breakfast after that storm drenched everything..... it took a couple days for all the water to subside..... [it actually rained a couple more times but the water could not subside].
One mobile home park made the news during the storm.... because of it's walls! In Apache Junction, AZ... the weather is spectacular nine months out of the year.... people flock here from the upper mid-western states. The majority of the people who come to this part of Arizona.... live in mobile home parks with big cinder block walls to keep the coyotes and homeless out. During the storm... a new wall was tested and it failed miserably. While building the wall.... the owner didn't put any drainage holes in the wall..... "it's a dry heat after all"..... When that two inches of rain hit that mobile home park.... the water got trapped.... and it had no where to drain.... and it broke down the 8 foot cinder block wall.... I saw the wall... it's a true story....
God said, through Isaiah, that He will call the walls of the new city Salvation and the gate to the city will be called Praise. He says we won't need flashlights or fancy candelabras. We will see everything plainly. Jesus is going to take away all the temptation..... one way to make sure the humans don't mess things up during the first 1,000 years of the reign of King Jesus.... is to take away temptation. Humans are suckers for temptation.... it's like catnip to us.... temptation is stronger than heroine to humans.... but God created us... and God knows how to turn that little thing, that makes us respond poorly to temptation, on and off.
God, through Isaiah, keeps talking about how the other nations are going to join the descendants of Jacob [Israel] in this city. I find it interesting.... God is going to overflow the city with descendants of those three sons of Noah's..... but unlike the walls in that mobile home park.... the walls around Jerusalem will only bring Salvation and that big gate will bring Praise to the lips of everyone who is fortunate to enter.
How will one city hold all the people????? Well first of all.... not all the people will want to be there.... they have a date with Satan and his buddies.... dealing with hotter and darker problems..... The people who will want to be Praising God within those walls name Salvation.... will be known to Jesus. He'll check the roster.... God controls time....so God knows who is meeting them at the gates.... if I'm supposed to be there.... my name will be on the roles.
