Happygirl, I knew who it was. I just didn't want to go all into it because I don't have flattering memories of the man. He was also in Waldorf in the 1990's, which is where my grandmother was at the time.
There are certainly denominations that tend to have more upbeat services as a normal part of their church.
We came from the diocese of Richmond. Our parish in Virginia Beach was very contemporary in style. I don't want to stop being Catholic, just hope to find a service that fits me.
Richmond is a known progressive diocese whereas DC is a more traditional generally speaking.
The few times I attended Mass at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Lexington Park it was a bit more non-traditional (folk music, etc) than I was used to. I do know they are highly active in ministries and social issues. You may want to give it a try one Sunday and see how you like it.
