I need a new ISP because verizon no longer provides a local dial up # and I am not paying 23.00 a month for internet service plus a long distant charge. I don't have cable in my area, and I tried NetZero, but my god they are slow, even for dial up. I think I can get metrocast internet service only, but that's 42.00 a month. Where else can I go?

Have you looked into COMCAST High Speed?

Maybe you could rent a nice house somewhere that has cable service. :yay:

Are you in an area that gets DSL? If so, you can get a lower data rate (768Kb/s) and I think it's about $17.
Verizon
Plug in your phone number to see if it's available. I'll make a guess and say no, since you don't have cable in the area either...

I live in the eastern part of the county and I have Direct TV. No cable service in the area although I think I can get MetroCast, but my gawd, that's high!:otter:

Seeing how you said Metrocast I'll assume St Mary's..

Have you checked into DSL from Verizon?

DirecWay or HghesNet (whichever name they go by now) is an option, but not a good one.

AND depending on the speed you want, you can probably get the cable internet cheaper.

Depending on where you are, Online Gateway is very good. Local dialup numbers and very fast.
Welcome to Online Gateway a Maryland ISP offering dial up, T1, DSL, and web hosting services

I had forgotten about them. I used to be with OLG and now I can't remember why I quit them. I called NetZero to cancel my account and the guy I was talking to acted like we were breaking up. He begged me to stay and offered me 30 days of Free Tech Support and 6.95 a month for the rest of the year. That's kinda hard to dismiss, so I told him, I'd give him 1 more chance, but I'm still looking for something faster. As fast as I can get with dial up anyway.

I kept my satellite, got rid of the landline phone and dial-up and got Metrocast internet. I don't regret it. For a few weeks it felt weird not having a phone but my cell works fine and no sense having 2 phones.

How's the speed and the connection? I like to keep my computer online all the time and I could do that with Verizon dial up, but not with netzero. Can't get DSL and hughesnet is outrageous.

I had OLG for a few years too, dropped them when I could get DSL. They were ok, I just got tired of dial-up speeds.

The $6.95 /mo is a good incentive to stay until you can figure something better out... they sound desperate....

I love it! For dial up, it's great!! And I am in St. Inigoes, new phone lines, and it's fast. Doesn't cut off.

The speed and connection are fine. Dial-up needs to die  I had Netzero before I got rid of the phone and dial-up. I actually saved a few bucks that way. You can leave it up all the time if you want.
