John 13:18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
I'm sure you've seen pictures of the Lord's Supper. Everyone looks like they are sitting.... like in chairs... and some are leaning on others... as if they are discussing something. Well, according to the commentary, this is what's going on. [I added the bold]
Leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him: At a special or ceremonial meal like this they would lay on their stomachs around a U-shaped table, leaning on their left elbow and eating with their right hand. It seems that from John’s position next to Jesus, he could lean back and be close enough to speak quietly to Jesus and still be heard.
Now all this talk about Passover, does not compute. So I went to "Got Questions".

The Mosaic Law stipulated what day the Passover lamb was to be eaten: Nissan 14 (Numbers 9:2–3). We must assume that Jesus kept the Law and observed Passover at the appointed time (see Galatians 4:4). After the Passover (Thursday) came the Day of Preparation (Friday) on which Jesus was killed. The Sabbath (Saturday) followed, of course, and then the first day of the week (Sunday)—the third day after the crucifixion and the day on which Jesus rose from the dead.
At any rate, it was Thursday Evening. The day of Preparation was on Friday, Jesus was put in the grave Friday Evening before the Sabbath started at sundown Friday through sundown on Saturday. They wouldn't find the empty tomb until Sunday morning.

Please check out verse 18. Jesus said, "I know who I have chosen." Jesus knew when Judas joined, he was a thief. Jesus knew Judas had a role to play. Peter was going to be the bigheaded, John was going to be the beloved, and Judas would be the betrayer. Those men didn't have a clue, but Jesus knew. He knew what was coming.

Now look at verses 28-30. I doubt Judas even knew he was the one who would do the deed. I figure he thought about it. Jesus called him down in front of everyone during the Nard incident. He was already primed to blow. Jesus just lit the fuse. Satan went to work. Judas didn't stand a chance.

I find it interesting; the others still didn't have a clue that Judas was about to meet with the Pharisees to betray Jesus. If they knew they would have tried to stop him. It says, they thought Jesus had Judas go pick up something for Passover or get something for the poor. They didn't have a clue.

Today, when Peter told John to ask Jesus "who", they would have simply leaned. Today, if Judas got up from the table, he would be pushing a chair out. Today, if Judas left the dinner table, the disciples would think he had to go pick something up from the store or something just as necessary but oddly timed.

It was night.
