Revelation 5:1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8 And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. 9 And they sang a new song, saying:
“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”
and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood you purchased for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying:
“Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”
14 The four living creatures said, “Amen,” and the elders fell down and worshiped.
I almost don't want to use the commentary because my old human brain has a thought about these verses. That thought is... Extremely Loud! This must have been a very, very loud dream. After all, verse 13, describes a huge gathering... "Every creature in heaven, on earth, under the sea, and on the sea." All of them begging Jesus to open the scroll.
This is from the commentary.
As it had been slain: The idea is that the sacrifice of Jesus is still fresh and current before God the Father. There is nothing stale or outworn in the work of Jesus on the cross. Thousands of years later, it is still fresh as the day He died on the cross.
I'm an old woman with an online Bible and some online commentary. These verses are way, way, way, above my paygrade. Like I said though, after reading the verses, my human brain is giving me a picture of what I think John described. God is on His Throne. All the angels and elders are doing their worshipping thing, and then the Mighty Angel comes in and begins to throw a temper tantrum. "Who's going to put those arrogant humans in their place?" God is being very patient. No one seemed to have orders to lift a finger to stop the craziness on earth. Those humans had just beaten and slain God's Son! The mighty angel was hot under the collar, while the other angels and elders continued to do their worshipping thing.
This is all rather ceremonial at first. It seems like the "mighty angel" is frustrated to anger. The time has come for something to happen. The Son of God has been returned to Heaven by the humans, beaten and martyred. The "mighty angel" seems to be saying, "How much longer are we going to wait to put this whole end times plan to work. Those humans have gone way too far!!!!"
The mighty angel is referring to the scroll, with visible instructions under seven seals to keep it from getting out before God is ready for it. The mighty angel wants God to open the scroll... someone has to teach those rotten big-headed, Gospel twisting nobody humans a lesson. They beat on the Son of God. The mighty angel must have been saying "We've had enough!".
Then Jesus steps up. "I'll open the seals. I'm the one they beat and sacrificed. I'm the one they nailed to the cross. They can't deny what they did... the scars are still visible in my palms."
Then things get really, really, really loud. Every creature, everywhere on, in, or around earth sings out, not in joyous praise like the angels and elders, but with fear, pain, and torture... like the humans put Jesus through.
Every creature... That's something I've never heard. Can you imagine how loud it would be if all the dogs in the world started barking and howling at the same time? Can you imagine how loud it would be if all the donkeys in the world started breying when the dogs started? Can you imagine how loud it would be if all the honking birds in the air all over the world went off at the same time? Now add to that all the whales and dolphins singing from the depths of the oceans. How loud would that be? That's only four types of creatures. I haven't even come close to the noise "every creature" would make! It's loud!
And all the angels and all the elders continued to praise God. Jesus took the scroll in HIs hand. John saw it in a vision.
It will be extremely loud!
