Itchy dogs

I am babysitting a friends dog who is constantly digging/chewing to the point she has matted all of her hair and is bleeding in spots. She is an older dog who is a yorkie mix of some kind. She has extremely oily hair but, dry skin. I have tried Benadryl and bathing her in a vitamin A & E shampoo. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a yorkie and we put fish oil over his food every other day, we just cut open a capsule and drizzle it over his food

Sounds like she has a hot spot now. Clip the hair and put some Gold Bond Medicated Powder on it...and keep putting the powder on the area until it dries up.

Stop bathing her.. that dries out her skin.

Does she have fleas?

Allergy to insects? Mine was doing that right above his butt and the doc says it's an allergy to fleas. No matter where they get bit, the inflamation is in that spot. If it is all over, I would say it could easily be a food allergy. Easily tested and fixed.

Did the dog have this problem before? Maybe its nerves, or maybe she is allergic to something at your house. Good luck

I just spoke with my friend and she said the dog has always been this way. She is going to try and change the dogs food and see what happens. The dog does not have any fleas and has been to the vet. I suggested she change vets. Meanwhile, I have given the dog some fish oil and she isn't chewing at herself as much. Thank you all for your help!

It sounds like a hot spot to me. We had a poodle years ago that would get these every now and again.

As far as oil in the food goes, we give each of ours a table spoon of vegetable oil over their hard food everyday. It makes their coat noticeable softer. You'll notice a difference after the first week.

Black Lab does it all the time, licking and chewing her paws, vet gave me allergy pills, they did not work, steroids, tried the spray of pepper for stop chewing and licking even bendryl, she still licks and chews. Not sure what food to try, hate changing food it only leads to night packages being left. Going to try a cone collar and see how she handles that for awhile.

Are stalking me I feed them Indoor little bites, I have tried the vet's dry food at 42.00 a bag and did not see a difference, they saw me coming Not sure what brand to try, I also add a little can, Alpo Lamb and Rice to the dry. They are my kids. They hve me trained and it's all my fault.

No they aren't, it keeps them from licking and chewing and she can still drink water. The blow up kind dosen't work for her. I used them on her ACL operations for both legs and they worked fine.

Okay, okay-something is really wrong here-your dog is thirsty, itches, scratches, leaves you "surprises" and you have put pepper spray on him and now are considering an Elizabethan collar? You claim your pet is part of the family? Would you treat your grandmother or child this way? You dog is trying to tell you something!

I have addressed this issue with my vet and have tried everything they have suggested. I have faith in my vet at St. Mary's Hospital and think it is just a combination of food allergies and air allergens. You have no idea about me or my dogs to leave me karma stating that I am punshing my dog by making her wear a collar to cut back on her licking. Do you believe I would leave that one 24/7. Your in a@@. You want to pay my vet bills for me and be the vet go right ahead. Come on Joel whisper what the dog wants me to know, I'm waiting.

I really like California Natural. I get it at Clippers in Solomons. Clippers Canine Cafe It's about $35 for 30 pounds, I think. Foods that the vet sells aren't always a whole lot better than what you can get at the grocery store.

I'm wondering if the paw chewing/itchiness and her peeing problem isn't somehow related..maybe allergy or something like that. If I were you, I'd call Clippers and talk to Kate (they're closed on Mondays). She's done a ton of research on foods and is very knowledgeable about allergies, digestive problems, etc.

You can also research this yourself. Perhaps sign up for a Lab forum or just read some of the posts. Generally, you can see if other Labs/Lab owners have the same problems you're having.

I have 6 dogs-some had serious health issues when I rescued them. It took awhile to resolve each dog’s problems; I didn't use quick fixes like pepper spray, collars or punishment-but that’s just me. Good luck!
