It's a miracle

Apollo had taken to peeing on the upstairs rug when I'd leave him alone and go out. Never any other time that I could tell, just bent because I'd left him. (We have separation anxiety.)

Last weekend Belvak set me up with her dog crate, which is quite large - 4ftx2ftx3ft. I was prepared to spend some time getting Apollo used to it, but he jumped right in and made it his own. I fixed it up with a blankie on the bottom and his little bed. It took no time for me to be able to send him to his apartment and leave without barking or carrying on, and he's not wild when I come back, either.

The crate has solved another problem: him losing his mind when the neighbors or the school maintenance guy is mowing grass.

This morning he began going crazy, barking and running around like a maniac when the mowing started, so I stuck him in the crate and gave him a treat. He calmed right down. Now he's sitting in there, alert and panting a bit, with me sitting next to him to reassure him, you can tell he's still upset about the noise but he's not losing it or particularly distressed.

What that means to me is that I can answer the phone when someone in the vicinity is using power tools and mowing because there isn't some crazy dog making a racket.

Thank you, Belvak, once again!

Bordermier Death Hug?

For puppies. It made him feel secure I guess.

Interesting! The schnauzer we adopted many moons ago gets anxiety over strangers. If we put her in the back room when we get company, she barks and yelps because she doesn't want to be alone. But if she is out she barks, shakes and growls because she doesn't want strangers in her house.... now I wonder if a crate would help.

I have always told people to crate their pets, more so if there are any issues.

:yay:

now I have started to let a few of mine out during the day (more for security purpose).... but there are SOME I have to crate if I want to come home to a place to live

 glad things worked out for ya.... its not cruel to crate a pet. If done right they feel more secure and safe.

Our last dog was the first dog I had ever crated. I was surprised how much she enjoyed being in there. I wished we had done that with our previous dog who would pee on the couch when we'd leave. Too bad we can't do that to one of our cats who likes to steal my youngest's stuffed banana that he won at the fair and pretend it's a kill. I wish my mom would crate her dogs. The last few dogs she's had never got house-trained so my kids learned to never sit on the floor at Grandma's house.

I have an instinctual aversion to caging a pet, which is one of the reasons I don't care for the zoo. But you're right, it does make him feel more secure in his own little happy place. Not wanting to cage him was about me, not him.

If you find that your dog is still barking when in a crate, try putting a blanket over top to cover the crate and your dog. I have to do this often with my little guy because he's ALWAYS been a barker.

little????? really???

look at those legs.... hell she is all legs!!!

and cute!!!

She trips over them constantly. She is soooo smart. She already knows sit, down, stay and come. We are working on 'leave it.' That's been a hard one for her, so I am thinking my control word will be 'come' for this as well.

Can I ask who your trainer is? You can send me a PM if you don't want to put her name on here. I have someone that comes to my house for 1-hour sessions. That has helped A LOT!! There is no way I would have been able to accomplish this on my own in less than 2 weeks time.
