Havn,t had a chance to get back but what ended up is Comcast sent another tech who in about a minute found that the Modem was bad. Cost me the price of a ethernet cable and a Net Card but the tech was very apologetic and left his number in case we have more problems. I could be mad but I'll chalk it up as the price of an education dealing with Comcast.

If you had gotten into the IT field say 10 - 15 years ago then street smarts would have landed you a good paying job. Not so now since the industry has matured. There are few shortcuts but if your serious then talk to an IT proffesional to get a good perspective on career requirments. Good luck

If you think you know what you are doing, I believe you can just walk in and pay the fee to take the certification tests.

You don't have to go to college to be A+ certified or MSCE certified, etc.. etc..

But be forewarned, you may not know as much as you think you do. These tests go into depth well beyond replacing PCI cards and memory chips. Not to scare you off from doing it, but you may want to buy the study guides before sinking money into taking the tests.

Certs are fine, but you must either have; A college education OR experience in lieu of...

15 - 20 years ago you could get in with just tech school, not anymore - that door has been closed. :coffee:

I can't wait to get OUT of the IT biz... I think fixing the non-techies stuff for 30 years is plenty of reason. Time for someone else to fix MY stuff......

I did take a test with a Microsoft Certified school and scored 95% on their test. She said that was highly unusual. I don't know if it was just a sales pitch or what but the questions were pretty darn in depth and somewhat hard.

I can pick up some books from the library and brush up on some of the stuff I don't know. But I'm not by any means stupid. So I'm thinking I might do ok.

Thanks for all your help. I don't know if I will do it or not though, as computers are a hobby for me and I'm not sure I want to make it a job. It would take all the fun out of it. Then there is the other part of me, that when I spend 6+ hours working on someone's computer and finally get the SOB to work, wishes I was charging by the hour! :lmao:

I finally made the break out of the hands on IT stuff and into management. What a huge jump, and wake up call. This was post-college of course, because without the degree that ceiling was pretty thick. I was given the advanced work, and projects but the green stuff was non-existent without a degree.

I have been in the field for 11 years.

....and sometimes that doesnt even help! :lmao:

And that is definitely true. Down here, they're looking for certain skills -and only those skills - and could give a crap less about anything else. In DC and larger cities, you have much more choice but down here it's much more a target market. I've been in IT for 20+ years and am constantly upgrading/refining my skill set to keep current and marketable even though I have a boatload of experience and education.
